How do you roll a joint?
How do you make a joint, or in other words, how do you roll a joint? If you’ve ever rolled a cigarette yourself, the transition to rolling a joint isn’t that big of a leap. Still, for most people, it takes a bit of practice. We’re happy to explain clearly how to roll a joint.
First of all, you might be wondering: why would I roll my own joint, instead of just buying one at a coffee shop? Of course, you can buy a pre-rolled joint, but then how can you be sure exactly what’s in it? If you really want control over what you’re using, it’s wise to roll your own joint.
The rolling paper
The first step in your preparation is choosing the rolling paper you’ll use. There are various types and sizes on the market, but the most well-known is the long, brownish rolling paper. These papers are much thinner than the paper you find in a pack of rolling tobacco. So you can see the ingredients of your joint through the paper. Another difference between cigarette rolling paper and long rolling paper is that regular rolling paper just keeps burning if you don’t do anything with it (think of a cigarette that needs to be tapped occasionally), whereas the long, thin rolling paper stops burning when you set it down. If you’re rolling a joint, we recommend using the thin rolling paper. You can find this, of course, at the Dutch Smart headshop. By the way, thin rolling paper isn’t always long; there are also some smaller sizes that might be easier for beginners to roll.
Ingredients
A regular joint consists of rolling tobacco or cigarette tobacco combined with cannabis. You can also smoke pure cannabis, but this is “strong” smoking and the chance of a coughing fit is high. Especially if you’ve never smoked a joint before, you shouldn’t try one with pure cannabis right away. Most people roll a joint using the entire contents of a cigarette. Whether you use tobacco or rolling tobacco is up to you. Tobacco is generally looser and will burn better than rolling tobacco. However, if you use rolling tobacco, you’ll usually be able to enjoy your joint for a bit longer. The tobacco-to-weed ratio is, of course, up to you, but for beginners, a ratio of 10–20 percent weed is often considered pleasant.
Here’s how to do it
Suppose you’re starting to roll a joint and you’re going to do so with tobacco from a cigarette. In that case, in addition to your rolling paper, cigarette (or tobacco), and weed, you’ll also need a filter tip. You can easily purchase those at Dutch Smart as well. Then follow the step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Crumble your weed. If your weed is dry enough, you can simply do this with your fingers. Crumble the weed until you no longer feel any hard pieces. Remove any small twigs as well. If your weed is still a bit too moist, use a grinder.
Step 2: Make a tip for your joint. Like rolling papers, tips are also available in various sizes. You can make your tip by rolling it tightly lengthwise, or you can fold the edges beforehand and wrap the tip around them.
Step 3: Remove the tobacco or rolling tobacco from your cigarette and crumble it slightly.
Step 4: Mix the weed and tobacco.
Step 5: Place your mixture and your tip inside the rolling paper. Lay everything out “horizontally,” meaning in the way your joint will eventually take shape. This makes it easier to roll it closed.
Step 6: Pick up the whole thing and carefully roll the joint closed. You can use a cigarette filter to press the mixture further into your joint. If all goes well, you’ve now successfully rolled a joint!
