What is Salvia Divinorum?

Salvia Divinorum, also known as "Wahrsagersalbei" or "Ska María Pastora," is a plant in the mint family that grows naturally in the mountain forests of Oaxaca, Mexico. The active ingredient is Salvinorin A, one of the most potent natural hallucinogens known. Unlike most psychedelics, Salvinorin A does not act through serotonin receptors but through kappa-opioid receptors, resulting in a unique and often intense experience.

The Mazatec Indians have been using Salvia Divinorum for centuries in shamanic rituals. Shamans consume the leaves to enter a trance and make contact with the spiritual world, often to determine the cause of illnesses or to predict the future.

Our Salvia Selection

Dried leaves

Salvia Divinorum leaves are the traditional form of this herb. You can chew them for a slower, milder trip, or smoke them in a bong or pipe for faster, more intense effects. Leaves are ideal if you’re looking for the pure, unprocessed experience or if you want to experiment with the traditional method of use.

Standardized extracts

Our Salvia extracts are standardized, meaning they contain a precise amount of Salvinorin A. This makes dosing easier and more predictable. We offer extracts in increasing strengths:

Salvia 5X extract – The mildest option, ideal for beginners. Contains five times the concentration of regular leaves. Good for getting used to the unique effects of Salvia.

Salvia 10X extract – A step stronger, suitable for those who find the 5X too mild. Still relatively accessible.

Salvia 15X extract – Medium strength, for users with some experience. Here, the effects start to become clearly more noticeable.

Salvia 20X extract – Powerful extract for experienced users. The hallucinations become more intense and profound.

Salvia 30X extract – Very strong, only for experienced psychonauts. Even small amounts are effective.

Salvia 40X extract – Extremely potent. With this, you’re entering serious hallucinogenic territory.

Salvia 80X extract – Our strongest extract. Only for very experienced users who know exactly what they are doing. Extreme caution is advised.

Other Salvia products

For those who want to grow Salvia themselves, we have Salvia Divinorum cuttings in our smartshop. Salvia is difficult to grow from seed, but cuttings grow well under the right conditions.

We also sell a liquid Salvia 2.5:1 extract (tincture) for sublingual use.

Note: Salvia officinalis (common sage) is a completely different product with no psychoactive effects, intended as a culinary herb and for health applications.

How do you use Salvia Divinorum?

Smoking

The most common method is smoking in a bong or pipe. Preferably use a high-temperature lighter (jet flame), as Salvinorin A only vaporizes at higher temperatures. Inhale deeply and hold the smoke in for as long as possible (20–30 seconds). The effects kick in within seconds and last 5–15 minutes.

Chewing (Quid)

The traditional Mazatec method is chewing fresh or soaked leaves. Roll the leaves into a ball and chew them slowly, keeping the saliva in your mouth as long as possible for sublingual absorption. This method results in a slower onset (15–20 minutes), longer duration (30–60 minutes), and milder effects. Ideal for beginners.

Dosage

Caution is advised with extracts. A small amount (0.1–0.2 grams of a 10X extract) can already produce powerful effects. Always start with less than you think you need. Sensitivity to Salvia varies greatly from person to person: about 10% of people are relatively insensitive, while others react extremely sensitively.

Effects of Salvia Divinorum

Salvia Divinorum is known for its unique, often bizarre effects that are difficult to compare to other psychedelics. Users report, among other things:

Dissociation from reality, where you feel as though you are stepping out of your body or into a completely different dimension. Many users describe a sensation of becoming an object, such as a wall, a chair, or a tree. Time and space are experienced in a fundamentally different way, with the feeling of traveling back in time or living multiple lives simultaneously.

Visual hallucinations range from the environment becoming two-dimensional to complete alternate realities. Some users encounter entities or beings. The experience is often described as dreamlike yet hyperrealistic at the same time.

The duration of a Salvia trip is relatively short compared to other psychedelics. When smoked, the peak effects last 5–15 minutes, after which you return fully to normal consciousness within 30 minutes. There is no hangover or after-effects.

Safe Use: Tips and Warnings

Salvia Divinorum is not a party drug and must be treated with respect. Follow these guidelines for a safe experience:

Have a trip sitter – Always have a sober, trusted person with you. During a Salvia trip, you may become disoriented and make unexpected movements. A trip sitter prevents you from accidentally hurting yourself.

Choose a safe environment – Use Salvia in a quiet, familiar space with no sharp objects or dangerous obstacles nearby. Sit or lie down comfortably. Do not use outdoors.

Start with a low dose – Especially with extracts, you can underestimate the potency. Start with the 5X or 10X extract before moving on to higher concentrations.

Do not combine – Do not combine Salvia with alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs. The interactions are unpredictable.

Do not drive – Although the effects are short-lived, you must absolutely not drive or operate machinery after use.

Listen to your body – If you don’t feel well or are anxious, do not use Salvia. Set and setting are crucial for a positive experience.

History of Salvia Divinorum

Salvia Divinorum originates from the Sierra Madre mountains in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The Mazatec Indians have used the plant for centuries in healing rituals and for divination. Shamans consumed the leaves to enter a visionary trance and determine the cause of illnesses in the “supernatural world.”

The exact origin of its use is unknown. Interestingly, the Mazatecs do not have a native name for the plant but use names that refer to the Virgin Mary (“Hierba María,” “Ska María Pastora”). This suggests that its use may have originated or become widespread only after Spanish colonization.

Western science did not discover Salvia Divinorum until the 20th century. In 1939, Jean Basset Johnson was the first to report on the use of “hierba maria” by the Mazatecs. Later, the famous ethnobotanist R. Gordon Wasson (who also introduced psilocybin mushrooms to the West) brought back specimens for scientific research.

Since the 1990s, Salvia Divinorum has become popular as a recreational drug in the Western world. In the Netherlands, Salvia Divinorum is legally available.
