Description

Salvia Cutting - Salvia Divinorum

It is very difficult to grow Salvia divinorum from seed, so if you want to grow your own plant, you will need to start with a cutting. Our cuttings are supplied in sturdy plastic tubes. The roots are in nutrient-rich agar.

Using Salvia Divinorum

The Salvia cutting needs a larger growing environment than the tube it comes in. So, after receiving it, you should repot the Salvia cutting immediately. The tube comes with a detailed manual describing the best way to repot and cultivate your Salvia.

Additional Information

Salvia divinorum is a perennial plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the Sierra Mazateca in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The plant does not occur in the wild and is considered a cultigen: a species maintained exclusively through human cultivation. The Mazatecs have been growing the plant for centuries in isolated, humid mountain locations for use by their shamans in healing rituals and divination.

A salvia cutting is the traditional way to propagate the plant. S. divinorum rarely sets seed and, in practice, can be grown almost exclusively from cuttings. The plant has a square, slightly hairy stem and large, soft leaves. The hairs on the leaves serve to absorb water from the air, which is consistent with the humid mountain climate in which the plant naturally thrives.

Active ingredient: salvinorin A

The primary active ingredient in Salvia divinorum is salvinorin A, a neoclerodane diterpene produced in the glandular hairs (trichomes) on the leaf surface. Salvinorin A is pharmacologically unique: it is the only known, entirely naturally occurring kappa-opioid receptor agonist without a nitrogen atom in the molecule, making it not an alkaloid but a terpenoid. This mechanism differs fundamentally from virtually all other psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, DMT), which primarily act on serotonin receptors.

In addition to salvinorin A, the plant also contains salvinorin B through J and divinorin A through F, but only salvinorin A is psychoactive. A total of 22 diterpene-like compounds have now been identified in S. divinorum. Salvinorin A is considered one of the most potent natural psychoactive substances: it is effective in microgram doses.

Effects

The effects of Salvia divinorum are dissociative in nature and differ significantly from classic psychedelics. Users describe a sense of disembodiment, the disappearance of the surroundings, and sometimes the complete loss of self-awareness. Frequently reported experiences include the sensation of being “sucked into” a flat, two-dimensional plane, the loss of any sense of height and depth, and a kind of blind, sleepwalking-like movement in which the user may unconsciously expose themselves to danger.

The experience is described by some as spiritual or insightful. Others, however, find it frightening and too intense, particularly at higher doses or without preparation. The short duration of effects (5 to 20 minutes when smoked) can be misleading: the intensity of the experience is not proportional to its duration.

Methods of administration and duration of action

The Mazatecs traditionally chewed fresh leaves as a “quid”: a wad of leaves held in the mouth for 15 to 30 minutes. The active compounds are absorbed through the oral mucosa. With this method, the effects set in more slowly (10 to 20 minutes), are milder, and last longer (30 to 60 minutes) than when smoked.

In the West, Salvia divinorum is more commonly smoked, either as dried leaves or as a concentrated extract (5x, 10x, 20x, 40x). When smoked, the effects occur within 30 seconds, peak in 1 to 2 minutes, and subside after 5 to 20 minutes. Extracts are significantly stronger than leaves and require extreme caution with dosing.

Growing Your Own Salvia

A salvia cutting is the only practical way to propagate S. divinorum. The plant has specific environmental requirements:

  • Light: Indirect light or filtered sunlight. Direct sunlight burns the leaves.
  • Humidity: High, at least 60%. The plant originates from a cloud forest and requires humid air. A greenhouse, terrarium, or regular misting helps.
  • Temperature: 15 to 25°C. Not frost-hardy.
  • Soil: Well-draining but moisture-retaining. Standard potting soil mixed with perlite works well.
  • Water: Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but never soggy. Root rot is the most common cause of death.

The plant can grow significantly indoors: stems over a meter long are not uncommon. Regular pruning encourages branching and results in a fuller plant. You can use the cut stem sections as cuttings to grow new plants.

Legality

Salvia divinorum is legal in the Netherlands. The plant, its leaves, and its extracts are not listed under the Opium Act. In the salvia divinorum category on Dutch-Smart, you’ll find not only cuttings but also dried leaves and extracts in various strengths.

Internationally, the situation varies. Australia was the first country to ban trade in 2002. Since then, several European countries and U.S. states have followed suit. In countries such as Belgium, Denmark, and Italy, salvia is banned or regulated.

Harm reduction (18+)

  • Tripsitter required: Due to its dissociative nature and the risk of uncontrolled movement, a sober supervisor is absolutely necessary, even at low doses.
  • Safe environment: Use salvia only while sitting or lying down, in a room free of sharp objects, open flames, or stairs in the immediate vicinity.
  • Start low: Begin with unconcentrated leaves, never with an extract. If necessary, gradually work your way up to lower extract strengths (5x).
  • Do not combine: Do not use salvia in combination with alcohol, cannabis, or other psychoactive substances.
  • Contraindications: Do not use if you have mental health conditions, a family history of psychosis, or if you feel anxious or restless.
  • Do not drive: Never participate in traffic after using salvia.
  • Age restriction: For persons 18 years of age and older only.
