Kanna Sceletium
Kanna, the mood-enhancing herb from South Africa
Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a psychoactive succulent plant that has been used for centuries by the Khoisan peoples of South Africa. The herb contains mesembrine alkaloids that affect the serotonin system, which can contribute to mood enhancement and relaxation. At Dutch-Smart, you’ll find kanna in various forms: from dried herb and leaves to concentrated extracts such as 10x and 50:1. Kanna is legal in the Netherlands and is snorted, chewed, or drunk as tea. Check out our other herbs for more ethnobotanical products.

Kanna: Effects, Use, and Dosage of Sceletium tortuosum
Kanna, also known as kougoed or channa, is the dried and sometimes fermented form of the succulent plant Sceletium tortuosum. The plant grows naturally in the arid regions of the Western Cape in South Africa and has been used as a recreational substance by the Khoisan peoples for centuries. The first written mention dates back to 1662, recorded by Jan van Riebeeck. Traditionally, the dried material was chewed, after which the saliva was swallowed. Today, kanna is available as a powder, cut leaves, extracts, and capsules.
Active compounds and pharmacology
The plant contains more than 25 alkaloids, of which the mesembrine class is the most important. The four main active compounds are mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, and mesembranol. Mesembrine acts as a natural serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) and phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor (PDE4). This means that kanna can increase serotonin levels in the brain, which users associate with improved mood, reduced tension, and a mild euphoric sensation. The plant’s total alkaloid content is around 1 to 1.5 percent, with fermented preparations typically having higher bioavailability than unfermented forms.
Methods of Use
Kanna can be ingested in several ways, with each method differing in the speed and intensity of the effects. Snorting (inhaling) produces the fastest effect, usually within a few minutes, at a dosage of approximately 20 mg of dried herb. Chewing is the traditional method and requires a higher dosage of around 100 mg for a noticeable effect, with a more gradual onset. When brewed as tea, the effects take the longest to kick in but last the longest. For concentrated extracts such as our 10x extract or the 50:1 extract, much lower dosages naturally apply. Always read the package insert for the product you choose.
Precautions and harm reduction
Kanna is intended exclusively for individuals 18 years of age and older. Although the herb is generally considered safe at normal dosages, an overdose can lead to headaches, nausea, anxiety, or heart palpitations. Do not combine kanna with SSRI medication or MAO inhibitors, as this can cause serotonin levels to build up. Always start with a low dose to test your personal sensitivity, especially with extracts. Pregnant women and people taking medication should consult a doctor first. You can find more information about the responsible use of herbs and other psychoactive products in our kratom category.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kanna
Is kanna legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is not subject to the Opium Act and is legal to purchase and use in the Netherlands. The herb is also legally available in virtually all other countries.
What is the difference between kanna herb and kanna extract?
Dried kanna herb contains the plant’s natural concentration of alkaloids (approximately 1 to 1.5 percent). An extract such as 10x or 50:1 is a concentrated version in which the active compounds have been enhanced. With extracts, you therefore need a much smaller amount to achieve the same effect. The 50:1 dry extract is the strongest variant in our range.
Can I combine kanna with other herbs?
Kanna is sometimes traditionally combined with other plants. However, never combine it with SSRIs, MAO inhibitors, or other serotonergic agents. When combining with herbs from our range, such as products from the relaxation category or salvia divinorum, it is wise to adjust the dosages and start low.
What is the best way to store kanna?
Store kanna in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. In a sealed bag or jar at room temperature, the herb will stay fresh for a long time. Extracts generally have a longer shelf life than dried leaves.
