Trace element ampoules
Spore vials are suitable for growers who want to inoculate their own cultures and maintain control over the entire cultivation process starting from spores. The vials contain 10 ml of sterile spore solution and come with a sterile syringe, an alcohol wipe, and instructions. Growing from spores requires more attention to sterile conditions than using a complete grow kit. If you have no prior growing experience, start with the 1200cc grow kits or the XL grow kits. Suitable only for individuals 18 years of age and older.

Spore vials, syringes, and prints
Our spore vials are suitable for use on various substrates and can be cultivated at temperatures as low as 15 degrees. On nutrient-rich soil such as compost or grains, the spores can form large mushrooms. The 10ml vials come with a sterile syringe, an alcohol wipe, and instructions. In addition to spore vials, Dutch-Smart also offers spore syringes and spore prints. Looking for other growing supplies? Varieties in the assortment
The assortment includes both Psilocybe Cubensis strains and Panaeolus varieties, two different genera, each with its own cultivation profile. The Cubensis varieties, including Golden Teacher, B+, Cambodian, PES Amazonian, Thai, Treasure Coast, Argentina, Nepal Chitwan, Costa Rica, Georgia, and PF Original, are the most common choice for home cultivation and grow on standard Cubensis substrates such as grains or PF-tek. The Tampanensis "Pollock" is a special addition: this is the strain used to grow sclerotia (magic truffles), named after its discoverer, Steven Pollock.
Panaeolus cyanescens Jamaica and Panaeolus Goliath are in a different category. Panaeolus cyanescens, also known as Copelandia, is known for having a significantly higher psilocybin content per gram than Cubensis species. This species requires a different substrate and different growing conditions and is suitable only for experienced growers. In addition to spore vials, Liquid Culture vials are also available in 5ml and 10ml sizes, an alternative where the mycelium is already activated and colonizes faster than dry spores.
Growing from spores: what’s involved
Growing from spore vials requires more preparation than a complete grow kit. You need sterile substrate, a suitable grow room, and basic knowledge of sterile work techniques. Contamination is the biggest risk when working with spores: mold, bacteria, or other microorganisms can render a batch unusable if you don’t work cleanly. Always use an alcohol wipe, wash your hands thoroughly, and preferably inject in a quiet environment without airflow. The included manual describes the steps. You can find more growing tips in the knowledge base, in the article on growing magic mushrooms.
Spore vials versus liquid culture
A spore vial contains germinated or germinating spores in a sterile liquid. Liquid culture already contains actively growing mycelium. The difference lies in the turnaround time: liquid culture colonizes faster because the mycelium is already active, whereas spores must first germinate before colonization begins. For beginners working with injections, liquid culture is a bit more forgiving. For growers who want to work with specific spore strains or preserve genetic material, spore vials are the right choice.
Safety and Dosage
Mushrooms grown from Psilocybe cubensis spores contain psilocybin and psilocin. Potency varies by species. Panaeolus cyanescens contains significantly more psilocybin per gram than common Cubensis species: do not assume the same dosage. Always start with a lower dose than you are accustomed to when trying a new species. Do not use psilocybin in combination with MAO inhibitors, SSRIs, or other psychoactive substances. Use is not recommended for those with psychosis, schizophrenia, during pregnancy, or for individuals under the age of 18. You can read more background information about the effects of psilocybin in the knowledge base.
Frequently asked questions about spore vials
What is in a spore vial?
A 10ml spore vial contains a sterile solution with mushroom spores from a specific strain. Each vial comes with a 10ml sterile syringe, an alcohol wipe, and instructions. The spores are intended for inoculation onto a suitable substrate for home cultivation.
What is the difference between a spore vial and a spore syringe?
A spore ampoule is a glass or plastic vial containing a spore solution that you draw up into a syringe yourself. A spore syringe is pre-filled and ready for immediate use. Both contain the same spore solution, but a syringe is slightly more convenient if you want to inoculate immediately. Check out our selection of spore syringes.
For which substrates are the ampoules suitable?
Cubensis species grow well on grain substrates (rye, wheat, barley), PF-tek (brown rice flour and vermiculite), and compost. Panaeolus cyanescens requires a different substrate, usually a mixture of straw and compost or dung-tek. Consult the manual or the knowledge base for species-specific recommendations.
Are spore ampoules suitable for beginners?
Growing from spores requires more technical knowledge than working with a complete grow kit. You must be able to work under sterile conditions and have access to suitable substrate and a growing space. For a first growing experience, we recommend a complete 1200cc grow kit. It contains everything you need and does not require a sterile inoculation step.
How long do spore vials last?
When stored in the refrigerator (4 to 8 degrees), spore vials typically have a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. Store them away from direct light and temperature fluctuations. Check the vial before use: cloudiness or discoloration may indicate contamination.
