Papaver somniferum, better known as the opium poppy, is a beautiful plant that is very easy to grow. The seeds do not contain any psychoactive substances, but the mature plants contain a large number of potent alkaloids.

Cultivation

The plants thrive best in a well-fertilized garden with good drainage, but the plant can also be grown in a flower pot, as long as there is enough room for the roots. The seeds can be planted between September and April. If there are frequent frosts in the winter, it’s better to wait until the end of winter or the beginning of spring to sow the seeds, as the plants cannot tolerate frost. Scatter the seeds on the soil and cover them with a very thin layer of soil. Water them until they germinate and keep the soil moist. The plant will start to grow after about a week. Don’t overwater them at first, or the roots will rot.
