What is a magic mushroom grow bag?

A grow bag is a sterile plastic bag filled with colonized substrate. The substrate, a nutrient-rich mix of grains and organic material, has been sterilized and inoculated with a selected Psilocybe cubensis strain before shipping. By the time the grow bag arrives at your door, the mycelium has fully colonized the substrate. The contents will appear white to off-white and are immediately ready for the fruiting phase.

The key difference from a standard grow kit is the format. A grow kit comes in a box with a lid and is designed for multiple flushes with structured maintenance. A grow bag is a substrate sack, usable right away, with no additional hardware required. That makes it an ideal choice for anyone who wants to test a new strain without committing to a full kit, or for cultivators running multiple strains simultaneously.

How to use a magic mushroom grow bag

Step 1: Inspection. Before doing anything, inspect the bag for contamination. Safe colors are white and off-white mycelium. Yellow spots or bruising are normal. Green, black, red, or pink coloration indicates contamination: contact customer support immediately if you see these. Also check that the bag is intact with no tears or holes. Do not open the grow bag before mushroom pins appear.

Step 2: Fruiting. Place the sealed bag in a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Maintain a constant temperature between 23-27°C (never exceed 27°C). Once the first pins appear, use clean, sanitized hands and tools to cut a slit at the top of the bag to allow fresh air exchange. If mushrooms are growing slowly or need more space, cut off the entire top of the bag (a 2-4 cm strip).

Step 3: Harvest. Harvest before the caps fully open and release spores. Spores can coat the inside of the bag and inhibit further growth. Gently twist and pull the mushrooms free from the substrate. Before each harvest, thoroughly clean your hands, forearms, and any tools with antibacterial soap and disinfectant spray. Discard the substrate after the harvest is complete.

Strains and what sets them apart

All 20 grow bags in this range contain Psilocybe cubensis, the same species but different genetic lines. The practical differences come down to growth speed, fruiting body morphology, and how much attention each strain demands. Golden Teacher and B+ are the most accessible entry-level strains due to their consistent growth and tolerance for minor environmental errors. Cambodian and Thai are among the fastest fruiters. Penis Envy, Jedi Mind Fuck, and Yeti carry a strong reputation for potency and require more careful handling and extra caution during use. Blue Ghost, Jack Frost, and True Albino Teacher are albino variants that produce white fruiting bodies.

Frequently asked questions about grow bags

How long before the first mushrooms appear?

Under the right conditions, 23-27°C with indirect light and adequate airflow, the first pins typically appear within 7-14 days. Timing varies by strain: fast growers like Cambodian and Thai pin earlier, while slower strains like Penis Envy or Mazatapec take longer.

What if there's no growth?

Check the temperature, increase fresh air exchange by enlarging the opening in the bag, and make sure there's indirect light. Slow or absent growth is most often caused by temperature that's too low or insufficient oxygen exchange after cutting the bag.

What does healthy mycelium look like?

White to off-white. Yellow patches or bruising are a natural reaction to pressure or oxygen exposure and are completely normal. Green, black, red, or pink coloration is a contamination signal. If in doubt, contact our customer support with a photo of the bag.

Can I reuse the grow bag after the first harvest?

The bags are designed for one primary harvest. Reuse significantly increases contamination risk. Discarding the substrate after the first harvest is what the manufacturer recommends.

Is growing psilocybin mushrooms legal?
