Butea Superba - Red Kwao Krua | 50 Grams
Butea superba is a woody climbing vine from the pea family (Fabaceae) native to Southeast Asia, most famously Thailand. In Thai herbal tradition the plant is known as "red kwao krua", and its root has been used for centuries as a tonic for men, alongside the related white kwao krua (Pueraria mirifica) and black kwao krua (Mucuna collettii). For this product the root has been dried and finely ground into a 50-gram powder.
Research on Butea superba mainly focuses on its flavonoids and flavonoid glycosides, including butrin and isobutrin, alongside phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol and isoflavones like formononetin and daidzein. Laboratory studies have shown antioxidant activity and an inhibiting effect on the enzyme cAMP phosphodiesterase, among other findings. This is preliminary, largely in-vitro research: consider Butea superba a traditionally used herb with interesting compounds, not a product with a guaranteed effect.
Dosage
Thai tradition and available studies generally work with amounts between 250 mg and 1 gram of powder per day. Start with a small amount, for example a quarter teaspoon, and only increase once you know how your body responds.
Use
The powder has a light brown colour and a mildly earthy taste and smell. You can mix it into water, a smoothie or yoghurt, or use it to fill an empty capsule of your choice. Do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and consult a doctor or pharmacist if in doubt or if you are taking medication.
Storage
Store the powder dry, dark and airtight in its original packaging, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
