Passiflora edulis is a climbing variety of passionflower found in Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina (including the provinces of Corrientes and Misiones). Common names include passion fruit (England and the U.S.), passion fruit (Australia and New Zealand), and purple granadilla (South Africa). 

The plant is commercially cultivated in warm, frost-free regions for its fruit and is grown in many places in Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, the Caribbean, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, East Africa, Ecuador, Haiti, Hawaii, India, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, the U.S. (California and Florida), Venezuela, the Philippines, and South Africa.

The passion fruit is round to oval, and yellow or dark purple when ripe. The inside is soft to firm and juicy, with many seeds. The fruit is eaten and pressed into juice; passion fruit juice is often added to other fruit juices to enhance the flavor.
