Description

Native American Tobacco - Lobelia Inflata | 20 seeds

Native Americans used Lobelia to treat respiratory and muscular disorders, and as a purifying agent. The species most commonly used in modern herbal medicine is Lobelia inflata (Indian tobacco). However, there are unpleasant side effects that limit the use of Lobelia.

Lobelia was already used as an “asthmador” in local medicine among the Appalachians. Two species, L. siphilitica and L. cardinalis, were once used to treat certain conditions. Herbalist Samuel Thompson popularized the use of Lobelia in the U.S. in the early 19th century, along with other plants such as orange root.

One species, Lobelia chinensis, is used as one of the fifty fundamental herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

Several studies show that Lobelia does not help people quit smoking.
