Description

Salvia divinorum leaves: the pure plant experience

Salvia divinorum is a plant from the mint family (Lamiaceae) that grows naturally in the humid mountain forests of Oaxaca, Mexico. The active ingredient is Salvinorin A, a diterpenoid that acts as an agonist on the kappa-opioid receptor. This mechanism of action differs fundamentally from virtually all other psychedelics: whereas substances like psilocybin and DMT bind to serotonin (5-HT2A) receptors, Salvinorin A exclusively activates the kappa-opioid system. The result is an experience that users describe as completely different from that of magic truffles or ayahuasca.

Dried leaves are the mildest form of Salvia divinorum. While standardized extracts (5X to 80X) contain a concentrated dose of Salvinorin A, the pure leaves offer a more gradual build-up of effects. This makes them suitable as a first introduction to this plant, or for users who prefer the traditional chewing method.

Dosage

Sensitivity to Salvinorin A varies greatly from person to person. About 10% of users experience hardly any effects, while others report intense shifts in perception even at low doses. Always start with a low dose and only increase it for the next session.

For the chewing method: use 8 to 20 leaves. Roll them into a small ball, chew slowly, and hold the saliva under your tongue for as long as possible for sublingual absorption. The onset begins after about 15 to 20 minutes, and the total duration is 30 to 60 minutes.

When smoking (in a bong or pipe): use 0.25 to 0.5 grams of dried leaf. Use a high-temperature lighter, as Salvinorin A only vaporizes at approximately 240°C. Hold the smoke for at least 20 to 30 seconds. The effects begin within 30 seconds and last 5 to 15 minutes.

Use

Mazatec shamans have been using Salvia divinorum in rituals for centuries. The traditional method is chewing: slowly chewing fresh or soaked leaves, allowing the active compounds to be absorbed through the oral mucosa. This method results in a slower onset and milder, longer-lasting effects than smoking.

Smoking is the most common method in the Western world. Use a hookah or bong for better filtration and cooling of the smoke. Regular pipes are also suitable, but the effect is generally slightly less potent.

Storage

Store the dried leaves in a cool, dry, and dark place in the original airtight packaging. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture. When stored properly, the leaves remain potent for years. After opening the package, we recommend storing the leaves in a resealable bag or glass jar.

Harm reduction and safety

Salvia divinorum is a powerful dissociative hallucinogen. Observe the following precautions:

Use Salvia only in a quiet, familiar environment with dimmed lighting. Always have a sober trip sitter present who can intervene if you become disoriented. Do not stand up or walk around during the experience, as the risk of falling is real during full dissociation.

Do not combine Salvia with alcohol, cannabis, medications, or other psychoactive substances. The interactions are unpredictable. Do not use Salvia if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have mental health conditions (particularly schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, or severe anxiety disorders). Also, do not use Salvia if you are taking MAO inhibitors or antipsychotics.

Do not drive or operate machinery after use. Although the acute effects of smoking subside quickly, a feeling of disorientation may persist for some time.

This product is intended exclusively for individuals 18 years of age and older.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Salvia leaves and Salvia extracts?

Dried leaves contain the natural concentration of Salvinorin A. Extracts are concentrated versions: a 10X extract contains ten times as much active ingredient per gram as the raw leaf. Leaves are suitable for the "plum method" and provide a milder, more gradual experience. Extracts are primarily smoked and take effect faster and more intensely.

How long does a Salvia experience with leaves last?

When chewing, the experience lasts an average of 30 to 60 minutes, with a gradual onset of 15 to 20 minutes. When smoked, the effects are shorter: the peak lasts 5 to 10 minutes, after which most effects fade within 20 to 30 minutes.

Is Salvia divinorum legal in the Netherlands?

Salvia divinorum is currently legal in the Netherlands. The plant and the active ingredient Salvinorin A are not listed on Schedule I or II of the Opium Act. Please note that legal status varies by country. Always check local laws if you are ordering from abroad.

Can I use Salvia leaves in a vaporizer?

Technically, it is possible, but not ideal. Salvinorin A vaporizes at approximately 240°C, which is higher than the temperature setting of many vaporizers. Smoking in a bong or pipe with a direct flame is more effective for releasing the active ingredient.
