What is a vaporizer?
What is a vaporizer? A vaporizer is a device used to extract or release the active compounds from plant material. In most cases, vaporizers are used for tobacco or cannabis. You can think of vaporizing (vaping) as an alternative to smoking.
How it works
When vaping, the plant material is heated to a temperature of approximately 180 degrees Celsius. This melts the active compounds in the plant, forming an aromatic vapor. This vapor should not contain any solid particles (such as tar) and reduces unwanted gases like nitrogen oxide. The vapor can optionally be filtered and cooled, for example via a water pipe or a built-in water or ice element. The vapor is then inhaled or stored for later use.
The different types of vaporizers
If you look at the Dutch Smart product range, you’ll see that there are various types of vaporizers on the market. There are very simple models, which are also quite affordable, but there are also high-quality precision vaporizers. These are usually a bit more expensive. Which one you choose depends on what you’re looking for: do you want it to last a long time and allow you to get the most out of the product? Then it makes more sense to choose a more durable device that’s easier to use.
Vaporizers are classified based on how they heat the material. This can be done through conduction or convection. In the case of conduction, the plant material is heated on a metal plate. Because the material could burn due to direct contact, this is not the most commonly used method.
With convection, there is no direct contact between the plant material and a heating element. Instead, hot air flows through the device, releasing more active compounds and eliminating the risk of burning.
You’ll also notice that there can be significant differences between devices, for example regarding the material the vaporizer is made of and how the material is administered. Some companies, for instance, use higher-quality plastic or a silicone tube.
Better than just smoking?
There is still a lot of debate about vaporizing and whether it is truly better than just smoking. In any case, we can tell you something about the differences. Vaping does not produce smoke. The material is exposed to lower temperatures, and less plant material is needed to achieve the same effect. For these reasons, there are generally fewer irritations and harmful effects, even for people standing near you (after all, there’s no secondhand vapor).
