What is kanna, and where does it come from? Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent plant that grows in South Africa. It is available in various forms, such as powdered herb or extract. Kanna is typically used as a recreational substance and has virtually no side effects.

 

Important to South African tribes

Kanna has been used by local tribes in South Africa for a very long time. For centuries, this substance has played a role in various important rituals, usually in the form of dried herb. For South African tribes, kanna was an important substance: it had a euphoric effect without causing hallucinations. Kanna is snorted, chewed, or brewed into tea. It reduces feelings of anxiety and improves mood in most people. It can also give you a sense of feeling more connected to your surroundings.

 

Which plant is it, exactly?

The strange thing is that it has never actually been determined exactly which plant kanna comes from. The effects of kanna are, in fact, very common to the Mesembryanthemum genus. Nowadays, the plant species M. expansum and M. tortuosum are what we mean when we talk about kanna. These plants contain a specific compound found in more than 25 other Mesembryanthemum plants. It is therefore difficult to determine the specific origin of the plant that is now known as kanna.

 

Using Kanna

As mentioned, you can use kanna in various forms and in different ways. The euphoric effect we discussed earlier is felt most quickly if you choose to snort kanna. Other methods, such as chewing or drinking it as tea, actually make the process take a bit longer. Whichever method you ultimately choose, make sure you use the correct dosage! Kanna itself has few side effects, but that is, of course, only the case if you opt for a normal dose. An overdose can cause headaches, nausea, anxiety, and/or heart palpitations, among other things.
