What is kratom?
What is kratom? Kratom is a herbal remedy or extract made from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa plant. The coffee plant also belongs to this family. The name kratom refers to the kratom plant, but also to the remedy made from it. Kratom can have various effects.
Different types of kratom
There are different types of kratom, each of which can have a different effect. Some types of kratom are named after their place of origin (Borneo kratom, Bali kratom, etc.), while others are named after specific properties of the plant. You can also choose the form you prefer: will you use leaves, powders, extracts, or tinctures? Kratom can be smoked, chewed, or drunk as tea. The latter method is widely considered the most palatable.
Extra tip: empty capsules
Do you have trouble with unpleasant tastes, and do you really not like the taste of kratom? Then you can also buy empty capsules and take your kratom this way. That way, you won’t taste anything, but you’ll still achieve the same effect.
What are the potential effects?
In countries like Thailand and Malaysia, kratom leaves have apparently been chewed for centuries as an alternative to opium. Kratom has various effects, making it difficult to predict in advance what you’ll experience when you use it. For example, it can be used as a stimulant, a sedative, or a recreational drug. Some people use it to treat diarrhea or as a treatment for opium addiction. The effect you want to achieve determines which type of kratom and which dosage you choose. Many people wonder if kratom is addictive. If you use kratom responsibly—for example, not every day—there is virtually no risk of addiction.
Possible kratom side effects and risks
Kratom actually has very few drawbacks and side effects. Side effects of kratom that are sometimes mentioned include headaches, mild nausea, increased urination, and occasionally constipation. These symptoms usually subside relatively quickly. However, its use is not without risks. This means: do not operate heavy machinery, do not drive a car, and do not engage in other (potentially) dangerous activities if you have used kratom. You can go from feeling energetic to very sleepy all of a sudden, which can affect your judgment and alertness. Be prepared for this. Kratom is not recommended for women who may be pregnant or for children under the age of 18. We also strongly advise against combining kratom with other recreational substances or medications.
