African dream root (Silene capensis)
African dream root (Silene capensis) is native to the green river valleys of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This unique flowering plant is considered a sacred species by Xhosa shamans, who claim it can induce remarkably vivid and prophetic dreams.
Dream herb or dream root?
As mentioned, Silene capensis has been used for thousands of years by shamans in the valleys of the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it is known as Undela Ziimhlophe or “white paths.” These are fragrant white flowers that open only at night, when they emit a fragrant and almost hypnotic aroma. The herb is also known as “African Dream Herb” or “African Dream Root” and is said to produce spectacular, vivid, and visual dreams.
In fact, it should be noted that it is incorrect to refer to Silene capensis as an herb, as the psychoactive components are found in the roots of this beautiful plant. In the Dutch Smart webshop, we therefore sell the root, not the flower itself. Silene Capensis is just one of over 300 herbs and plants that the Xhosa use for specific purposes. Yet it is one of the most potent and is considered sacred—due to its dream-inducing effects.
Usage
First, grind a portion of the root. Add a heaping tablespoon of powder to half a liter of water and mix until foam forms. Sip this until you feel the foam expand in your mouth, then go to bed. Take on an empty stomach.
