Health Benefits

Raw cacao nibs are a rich source of antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which offer protection against oxidative stress and inflammation. They are also good sources of minerals such as magnesium, iron, and potassium, which play a role in ensuring heart health, muscle strength, and nerve stability. Additionally, they provide good amounts of fiber for healthy digestion and a better mood thanks to the presence of theobromine and a small amount of caffeine.

Uses

Use Raw Cacao Nibs on their own or as an ingredient in food.

Ceremonial Use

The earliest ceremonial use of cacao nibs dates back to the ancient Mesoamerican cultures—the Maya and Aztecs regarded cacao as sacred food, a gift from the gods. A typical ceremonial dose ranges from 20 grams to 40 grams of raw cacao beans. This corresponds to approximately 20 to 40 grams of raw cacao beans. Some ceremonies go far beyond the normal limits, up to 42 grams or even more; this depends on the tradition used, the intended purpose of the ceremony, and the experience and sensitivity of the participants.

1. Set your intention: Before you begin, clarify for yourself what the purpose of the ceremony is. Perhaps it is personal growth, healing, giving thanks, or gaining insight regarding a specific challenge.

2. Selecting cacao nibs: Use only high-quality, raw, organic cacao nibs. The best sources are those that support sustainability and fair trade. This honors the cacao in its sacredness, with only pure energy.

3. Making the ceremonial cacao drink:

• If you wish, start by lightly roasting the cacao nibs at a low temperature to bring out their aroma. This is optional, depending on your taste.

• Grind the roasted or unroasted cacao nibs into a fine powder using a coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle.

• Add the cocoa powder to hot water or your dairy alternative. Add as much water or milk as you like, depending on how thick or thin you want the drink.

If desired, add natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup and spices such as chili or cinnamon-vanilla to provide extra flavor and energizing properties. 4. The ceremony: Make sure you have cleansed your surroundings with items like sage or Palo Santo—or initiated the space—by sharing the cacao drink in a circle of participants

• Once everyone has their cocoa, ask them to energetically breathe their intention into the cocoa. This “activates” it with their personal prayer or wish.

• Consume the cacao. Drink it in unison. Take a moment to truly savor the taste; the warmth and energy of the cacao.

• You can continue the ceremony by meditating, singing, dancing, drumming, or doing something else that helps you connect as a group and deepen your intentions.
