Gandalf Pipe, Pink
The Gandalf pipe is a classic hand pipe shape, named after the long, curved pipe carried by the famous wizard. The long, curved glass gives the smoke more time and surface area to cool before it reaches the mouth, giving a smoother draw than a short spoon pipe. This version is pink and made of heat-resistant Pyrex (borosilicate) glass, which withstands the heat of the flame better than ordinary glass and is less likely to crack from sudden temperature changes. The pipe belongs to Dutch-Smart's Pink Smokers Stuff line of pink smoking accessories.
The bowl has a carb hole, also called a kick hole: a small opening you use to control the airflow through the pipe. Keeping the hole covered while lighting builds up smoke in the bowl and stem; releasing it draws the built-up smoke in all at once.
Usage
Pack the bowl with finely ground herb and press it down lightly, not too firmly. Keep the carb hole covered with your finger while you light the herb and inhale gently through the mouthpiece. Release the hole the moment you want to pull the smoke in, so the built-up smoke clears in one go. Let the pipe cool for a moment after use before storing or cleaning it, as glass can get hot fast in one spot.
Maintenance
Clean the pipe regularly with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt: put a splash of alcohol and a handful of salt in a sealable bag, add the pipe and shake gently until the residue loosens. Rinse thoroughly with warm water afterwards and let it dry completely before using it again.
