Description

Mexicana Magic Truffles – 15 grams

Psilocybe mexicana is the species with which the history of cultivated psilocybin truffles begins. In 1958, mycologist R. Gordon Wasson documented the use of this mushroom in a ritual context in Oaxaca, Mexico. The same species was later studied by chemist Albert Hofmann, who isolated and synthesized psilocybin and psilocin as the active compounds. The sclerotia of the Mexicana serve as the plant’s underground storage organ and contain the same compounds in a milder concentration than the mushroom itself.

The active compound psilocybin is converted into psilocin after ingestion, which acts as a partial agonist on the serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. At a normal dose, the Mexicana experience is mild and accessible: users report a cheerful mood, slight perceptual changes, and an open, relaxed feeling. Pronounced visual effects typically only occur at higher doses.

Dosage

Taking it on an empty stomach produces the strongest and most predictable effect. The correct amount depends on your body weight, whether the truffles are fresh or dried, and how intense you want the experience to be. Use the calculator below to determine your personal starting dose:

The first effects are noticeable after 20 to 45 minutes. The total duration averages between 3 and 5 hours. When sharing a 15-gram package between two people (7.5 grams each), the experience is mild to pleasantly moderate for most people, making Mexicana a good choice for a first shared experience.

Usage

The most direct method is to eat the truffles whole or in small pieces on an empty stomach. Those prone to nausea are better off making tea: finely chop the sclerotia, pour water no hotter than 70°C over it, and let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain out the solids and drink the tea slowly. The steeping process can be repeated for a second, milder serving.

Combining with alcohol or other psychoactive substances is strongly discouraged, even with a mild variety like Mexicana.

Storage

Store the truffles unopened in the refrigerator at 2–4°C until the expiration date. Consume as soon as possible after opening. A slight blue discoloration due to damage is normal and indicates oxidation of psilocybin, not spoilage.

Harm reduction

Only use Mexicana truffles if you are feeling well, both mentally and physically. Avoid use if you have a history (personal or familial) of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Do not combine with SSRIs, lithium, or MAO inhibitors. Ensure you are in a familiar environment and preferably have a sober person present. You can find more background information on safe use in our knowledge base.

Available exclusively to individuals 18 years of age and older.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mexicana the right choice for a first truffle experience?

Yes, Mexicana is the mildest strain in our selection and therefore the most logical choice for a first-time experience. At 7.5 grams per person, the experience is mild and manageable for most people. Always start based on your body weight using the calculator above. If you want to step it up afterward, Tampanensis or Pajaritos are the most obvious next choices. For a complete overview, see the magic truffles category page.

Mexicana seems mild to me. When should I choose something stronger?

If you’re already familiar with Mexicana and want more, Atlantis is a solid step up. If you want to go straight for a stronger experience with more visual effects, Hollandia or Space Invaders are better choices. Keep in mind that strong varieties are significantly more intense than Mexicana—not just a small step up. The calculator also provides a customized dose for those varieties.

Can I share one package of Mexicana between two people?

Yes, 15 grams split between two people (7.5 grams each) provides a mild, pleasant experience for most people with Mexicana. This is a common way to try it together for the first time. Make sure you both take it on an empty stomach for a comparable result.

What is the difference between Mexicana and Pajaritos?

Pajaritos is a cultivated variety of the same Psilocybe mexicana base species, but with a longer growing period, resulting in larger sclerotia that contain slightly more psilocybin. At an equal dose, Pajaritos generally provides a slightly more intense experience than standard Mexicana. The difference in character is subtle but noticeable.

Additional Information

About 10 to 15 minutes after taking the truffles, the first effects become noticeable.

At first, your senses become sharper; you hear and see everything more clearly.

Soon, the reality of everyday life changes, causing you to view yourself and everything around you in a completely different way. This often triggers a fit of giggles.

It might all feel a bit confusing, because your brain can no longer make sense of what’s going on.

The intensity and nature of the trip vary from person to person; it depends on how the person is feeling, so definitely don’t use truffles if you’re in a bad mood.

Almost all drugs intensify your senses.

The sclerotia contain the substance psilocybin (a tryptamine) that closely resembles the human neurotransmitter DMT (dimethyltryptamine).

Physically, psilocybin is not at all intense, but it can be very confusing for the mind, so it is advisable to use it in a quiet and familiar environment.Tip: make sure a sober person is present.

In South America, sacred mushrooms have been used since time immemorial to make contact with worlds that normally lie beyond our consciousness. But ancient artifacts have also been found in Europe that point to the significant role magical mushrooms played in the lives of our ancestors.

The renowned mushroom researchers Valentina and Gordon Wasson discovered before World War II that among some Mexican Indian tribes, the ancient rituals of the sacred mushroom still existed. When Western researchers were allowed by the shamans to experience the effects of the psilocybin mushroom for themselves, a wave of relief swept through the community of truth-seekers; at last, the drink of the gods, the nectar, the soma, the elixir of life, the flesh of the gods had been rediscovered. In the 1960s, interest in Native American initiations surged, and countless people sought entheogenic experiences using mushrooms.

Then, in the 1970s, psychonauts discovered that the European variant of the psilocybe mushroom family—found all over the world (psilo means “bald,” cybe means “head”)— the common European psilocybe, is an excellent entheogenic agent. Those who wish to seek it out can find it in the most diverse of places; the pointed psilocybe (Psilocybe semilanceata) in public gardens, private gardens, and parks, along sports fields and roadsides; the dung psilocybe (Psilocybe coprophila) on manure or heavily fertilized soil; the sand psilocybe (Psilocybe montana) among lichens and mosses on sandy forest and heathland. They are small, between two and three centimeters tall, and not easy to find. Moreover, there are quite a few other small mushrooms that resemble psilocybes to the untrained eye. Anyone setting out for the first time needs to know exactly what a psilocybe looks like.

All across the country, there are connoisseurs who head out into the fields in the spring and fall and sell their harvest to a small group of loyal users. Psilocybe is best when fresh. The dose can range from five to twenty mushrooms. The latter dose produces a fairly intense trip, comparable to Mexican, Cuban, Nepalese, or Balinese psilo. As with virtually all substances, an empty stomach is recommended. Psilocybe mushrooms may cause mild nausea in the first half hour. If you eat something very light, such as a cracker, this usually goes away. The trip can last four to eight hours.

The mushrooms dry very well and retain their potency for months. It is therefore common practice to dry a supply of this mood-enhancer for the long winter months. Native psilocybe is an ideal substance that you can enjoy in nature, at home, or at a party. It’s mild, and as long as you don’t take too much, you won’t freak out. It gives you a cheerful high. The little mushrooms aren’t harmful to your health and, as far as we know, have no side effects—as long as you drink plenty of water to flush your kidneys.

One user says, “You learn to look at yourself objectively; you start to see through the things you use to fool yourself. Some people are stuck in that for their whole lives. With mushrooms, you can break through that in one go. On psilo, I can really let loose, but not superficially. Then I feel the need to go deeper.”

In our country, there are psychonauts who have a small grow operation for exotic mushrooms—such as Mexican ones—in their basements. Small-scale distribution takes place through networks of enthusiasts. The effects of these mushrooms are very strong. It’s best to brew them into tea. Use two to three grams of dried mushrooms per person in a large glass of water. Bring the water to a boil in a pot. Let the mushrooms steep for fifteen minutes on low heat (so that only an occasional bubble rises from the bottom). Drink the tea on an empty stomach. After an hour, you’ll start tripping. This lasts about four hours and then slowly wears off. There are no aftereffects. You can add more water to the mushrooms, let the tea steep, and store it in the refrigerator. This tea is naturally less potent, but delicious with breakfast. The mushrooms can also be incorporated into an omelet. The effect is strongly entheogenic, yet also very grounded. For example, you can mentally travel to a place or a person and, as it were, sense how things are going. If something is wrong, or the person in question is unwell, you can “feel” it. You can go into the future and “sense” how a certain situation will unfold. You can also examine your own body in your mind. You’ll receive signals about your weak spots and what you can do about them.

When you walk in nature, you see wonders, such as energy circuits just below the ground among trees, plants, and shrubs. Chlorophyll—the green in the leaves that plays a vital role in nature—takes on immense significance. Everything sparkles, glitters, and vibrates. Clouds are spirits; sunrises and sunsets are cosmic events. This is definitely not a party drug.

"Missionaries have explained how difficult it is to convey the Christian message to people who are convinced that they already possess a means—the sacred mushrooms—through which they can receive the word of God directly and in the flesh. They can also travel to heaven and make contact with God there." (P. Hurst, Hallucinogens and Culture)
