Mexicana Magic Truffles – 15 grams
Psilocybe mexicana is the species with which the history of cultivated psilocybin truffles begins. In 1958, mycologist R. Gordon Wasson documented the use of this mushroom in a ritual context in Oaxaca, Mexico. The same species was later studied by chemist Albert Hofmann, who isolated and synthesized psilocybin and psilocin as the active compounds. The sclerotia of the Mexicana serve as the plant’s underground storage organ and contain the same compounds in a milder concentration than the mushroom itself.
The active compound psilocybin is converted into psilocin after ingestion, which acts as a partial agonist on the serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. At a normal dose, the Mexicana experience is mild and accessible: users report a cheerful mood, slight perceptual changes, and an open, relaxed feeling. Pronounced visual effects typically only occur at higher doses.
Dosage
Taking it on an empty stomach produces the strongest and most predictable effect. The correct amount depends on your body weight, whether the truffles are fresh or dried, and how intense you want the experience to be. Use the calculator below to determine your personal starting dose:
The first effects are noticeable after 20 to 45 minutes. The total duration averages between 3 and 5 hours. When sharing a 15-gram package between two people (7.5 grams each), the experience is mild to pleasantly moderate for most people, making Mexicana a good choice for a first shared experience.
Usage
The most direct method is to eat the truffles whole or in small pieces on an empty stomach. Those prone to nausea are better off making tea: finely chop the sclerotia, pour water no hotter than 70°C over it, and let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain out the solids and drink the tea slowly. The steeping process can be repeated for a second, milder serving.
Combining with alcohol or other psychoactive substances is strongly discouraged, even with a mild variety like Mexicana.
Storage
Store the truffles unopened in the refrigerator at 2–4°C until the expiration date. Consume as soon as possible after opening. A slight blue discoloration due to damage is normal and indicates oxidation of psilocybin, not spoilage.
Harm reduction
Only use Mexicana truffles if you are feeling well, both mentally and physically. Avoid use if you have a history (personal or familial) of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Do not combine with SSRIs, lithium, or MAO inhibitors. Ensure you are in a familiar environment and preferably have a sober person present. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mexicana the right choice for a first truffle experience?
Yes, Mexicana is the mildest strain in our selection and therefore the most logical choice for a first-time experience. At 7.5 grams per person, the experience is mild and manageable for most people. Always start based on your body weight using the calculator above. If you want to step it up afterward, Tampanensis or Pajaritos are the most obvious next choices. For a complete overview, see the magic truffles category page.
Mexicana seems mild to me. When should I choose something stronger?
If you’re already familiar with Mexicana and want more, Atlantis is a solid step up. If you want to go straight for a stronger experience with more visual effects, Hollandia or Space Invaders are better choices. Keep in mind that strong varieties are significantly more intense than Mexicana—not just a small step up. The calculator also provides a customized dose for those varieties.
Can I share one package of Mexicana between two people?
Yes, 15 grams split between two people (7.5 grams each) provides a mild, pleasant experience for most people with Mexicana. This is a common way to try it together for the first time. Make sure you both take it on an empty stomach for a comparable result.
What is the difference between Mexicana and Pajaritos?
Pajaritos is a cultivated variety of the same Psilocybe mexicana base species, but with a longer growing period, resulting in larger sclerotia that contain slightly more psilocybin. At an equal dose, Pajaritos generally provides a slightly more intense experience than standard Mexicana. The difference in character is subtle but noticeable.
