Calibration weight for precision scales

Scales, and especially precision scales that measure to within 0.01 grams, need to be calibrated from time to time to stay reliable. Calibration is done using a reference weight that itself has an even smaller tolerance than the scale can measure, so you can be sure whether the scale is adjusting correctly. This 50-gram calibration weight is made of metal and fits most common digital precision scales in the Dutch-Smart range, such as the models in the Kansas, Atlanta, and Detroit series. Especially when weighing small amounts, where every 0.01 gram matters, a properly calibrated scale is what separates a reliable reading from an unreliable one.

Use and maintenance

Turn the scale on, wait until the display reads zero, and then place the calibration weight on the weighing platform. Compare the reading to the stated value of 50 grams; if the reading is off, the scale's manual usually points to a calibration mode or button you can use to correct the difference. Handle the weight with a cloth or by the edge rather than with bare fingers, since grease and moisture from skin can slightly affect the mass and cause corrosion over time. Store the weight somewhere dry, preferably in the box it came in or a sealed container, so it doesn't get damaged or dirty between calibration sessions. Repeat the check regularly, for example every few weeks with frequent use, so any drift gets noticed in time.

If your scale has a different measuring range, Dutch-Smart's range also includes precision scales such as the Kansas and the Atlanta, which can be kept accurate using this same type of calibration weight.
