Camellia Sinensis - Green Tea Extract 30% - 50 grams
Camellia sinensis is the plant from which all true teas are made, from green to black tea. This extract is made specifically from green tea and standardised to 30%, meaning it contains a concentrated amount of polyphenols compared to ordinary tea leaves. The main active compound is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a catechin extensively studied in the scientific literature for its antioxidant properties.
Research into EGCG shows a wide dosing range, from a few tens to several hundred milligrams per day, depending on the goal and individual sensitivity. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) notes that doses from around 800 mg EGCG per day from supplements have in some studies been linked to early signs of liver stress, so more is not automatically better. Camellia sinensis is originally cultivated in Asia, with China and Japan as the best-known countries of origin, and the same plant yields green, black, white or oolong tea depending on how it is processed. With green tea, the leaves are steamed or heated rather than fermented, which means polyphenols such as EGCG are largely preserved.
Dosage
Start with a small amount, for example a quarter to half a gram of powder per day, and build up carefully. Do not exceed the amounts used in scientific research without consulting a doctor, especially with liver conditions or medication use.
Usage
Dissolve the powder in water, juice or a smoothie, or process it into homemade capsules. Do not combine it with large amounts of caffeine from other sources, since green tea extract naturally contains some caffeine as well.
Storage
Store the extract airtight, dry and away from light, out of reach of children, to prevent oxidation of the polyphenols.
