Unlike many other herbs in this category, Bai Zhu is much less well known in the Western world. Atractylodes (Chinese thistle daisy) is a plant whose roots are used for a variety of purposes.

What is Bai Zhu?

As one of the eight famous specialties of Zhejiang Province, this Chinese herb is primarily produced in Shaoxing. Given its use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is regarded as an equivalent of Ren Shen, better known as Ginseng. Bai Zhu is also known as Atractylodes Rhizome or Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome. The most potent part of this herb is the root, which is primarily harvested in the winter.
