Description

Calendula officinalis 50g - petals

Calendula officinalis is also known in the Netherlands as the marigold. The plant is native to Southern Europe, but it is now commonly found in the Netherlands as well. The flower is used very frequently in ornamental gardens because it looks stunning and colorful, but what many people don’t know is that the marigold is also packed with beneficial properties. Did you know that the flower is even used as a natural dye for cheese or butter?

The symbolism surrounding the marigold is even more beautiful than the flower itself. According to Greek myths, marigolds emerged from Aphrodite’s tears when her Adonis died. The marigold is also referenced in Christianity, where it is dedicated to Mary. In the Middle Ages, people often associated Mary’s name with something beautiful. Hence the name “Mary’s gold” for the marigold.

The effects of marigold

Calendula is used in numerous ways in both herbal medicine and cooking. For example, both fresh and dried flowers can be added to soup, but ointments and tinctures made from marigold are praised for their health benefits.

  • Soothes the mouth and throat
  • Helps with a tickling sensation in the throat and pharynx
  • Soothing sensation on the vocal cords
  • Supports normal liver function
  • Contains essential amino acids and antibacterial components

Using Calendula

To make about 1 liter of calendula tea, you’ll need 30–40 grams of dried flowers. First, bring water to a boil. Once it reaches a boil, add the dried marigold flowers. Let it steep for 3–5 minutes, then turn off the heat. Strain and let it steep for about 10 minutes, then serve the infusion.
