Spirulina 80g
Arthrospira platensis, or spirulina, is a blue-green algae native to the lakes of Central Africa and parts of South America and Mexico. The official name for this group is “cyanobacteria.” There are more than 1,500 species of blue-green algae, but Arthrospira platensis is particularly well-known for human consumption. Spirulina is widely regarded today as an absolute superfood.
The first superfood on Earth!
Spirulina is also one of the oldest life forms on Earth. In fact, this blue-green microalga is partly responsible for the production of oxygen in our planet’s atmosphere.
It is even one of the, and perhaps the, richest sources of protein in the world. Its protein content is around 60 to 70 percent. It is especially the combination of its high number of nutrients and antioxidants that makes spirulina one of the world’s most popular supplements. The high protein content surpasses that of other protein-rich sources such as beef, chicken, and soybeans. Other compounds present include 9 essential and 10 non-essential amino acids, as well as high levels of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), beta-carotene, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, phosphorus, nucleic acids RNA & DNA, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin, a pigment-protein complex found only in blue-green algae.
Spirulina is packed with nutrients
The algae was already consumed by the ancient Aztecs, but the powder became particularly popular in modern times when NASA suggested it could be grown in space for use by astronauts. A single teaspoon of powder contains 4 grams of protein, 11% of the RDA for Vitamin B1, 15% of Vitamin B2, 21% of copper, and 11% of iron. It also contains significant amounts of magnesium, potassium, and manganese, as well as small amounts of nearly every other nutrient you need.
Usage
The recommended daily intake is between 2 and 5 grams per day. Stir a teaspoon of powder into fruit juice, vegetable juice, or mix it with yogurt. Spirulina is available in tablet or powder form, but we prefer the algae in powder form because it’s much easier to add to recipes.
