Valerian 50 grams | Valeriana officinalis
Want to kick back on the couch with a movie, without thinking about work all evening? Valerian can help. Plus, this herb is great for promoting a good night’s sleep.
What is Valerian?
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. The root of this plant has been used for thousands of years because it is believed to help you fall asleep more easily. There are more than 250 species of valerian, but V. officinalis is the species most commonly used in the West.
Effects of valerian
Valerian calms the central nervous system and is therefore often used when a hectic lifestyle needs to be managed. The herb is a popular remedy for unwinding in the evening.
Use of valerian
You can prepare valerian as a tea. To do this, use a few tablespoons per half liter of water and let it simmer for 5 minutes in a covered pot, so the beneficial vapors don’t escape. Let it cool for a moment and then drink it with some honey.
Warning
Sometimes people experience the effects of valerian as stimulating rather than relaxing. In that case, it is best to stop using it. Prolonged and excessive use can lead to headaches and restlessness.
