Filling gelatin capsules yourself (size 1)
Gelatin capsules are the most commonly used type for filling with herbal powders. They dissolve quickly in the stomach, ensuring rapid absorption of the contents. Size 1 is the smallest standard capsule size and holds approximately 400 mg of powder, depending on the density of the material. This makes this size suitable for herbs and extracts where you want a relatively small dose per capsule, or where the powder is compact and heavy. For kanna and similar herbal powders, size 1 is a common choice. For kratom, which is used in higher doses, sizes 00 or 000 are more practical.
Would you prefer not to use animal products? Then choose the vegetarian HPMC size 1 capsules from the same range.
Instructions: How to fill capsules with a capsule filling machine
For best results, you’ll need: empty size 1 capsules, a size 1 capsule filling machine, finely ground powder, and a precision scale to weigh the total batch beforehand.
Step 1: Grind the powder finely
Use a coffee grinder or food processor to grind the herb or extract as finely as possible. Coarse material fills the capsules unevenly and can jam the machine. The finer the powder, the more evenly it will be distributed across the 24 capsules.
Step 2: Weigh the total batch
Weigh the total amount of powder you want to distribute using a precision scale before you begin. Divide this weight by 24 (the number of capsules per batch) to calculate the average dose per capsule. This is the only way to reliably control the dosage per capsule. See the scale overview below for the right choice for your specific use.

Step 3: Load the machine with capsules
Separate the two halves of each capsule and place the bottoms into the lower half of the capsule machine frame. Make sure all capsules are properly positioned and at the same height. Set the tops aside.
Step 4: Distribute the powder
Sprinkle the measured powder over the frame and use the included distribution card in a sweeping motion to distribute the powder evenly across all capsules. Continue sweeping until each capsule is visibly filled. Gently tap the frame a few times on a flat surface to settle the powder.
Step 5: Tamp
Use the included tamper to lightly press the powder into the capsules. This creates space for an extra layer of powder. Repeat the filling and tamping as needed until all capsules are filled to capacity. Do not tamp too hard: the capsule must still be able to close properly.
Step 6: Close the capsules
Place the part of the frame with the tops of the capsules onto the part with the filled bottoms. Press both halves firmly together in one motion. The capsules will click shut. Remove the frame: you now have 24 filled, sealed capsules.
Step 7: Check and store
Visually inspect each capsule for any seals that aren’t completely closed. Store the capsules in a dry, sealed jar or container in a cool, dark place. Gelatin capsules are slightly moisture-sensitive: do not store them in a humid environment, otherwise they may stick together or soften.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much powder fits in a size 1 gelatin capsule?
Approximately 400 mg, depending on the density of the powder. Light, airy powder holds less per capsule than heavy, finely ground material. Always weigh the entire batch beforehand to calculate the average dose per capsule.
What is the difference between gelatin and vegetarian capsules?
Gelatin capsules are made from animal collagen and dissolve quickly in the stomach. Vegetarian HPMC capsules contain no animal ingredients and are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. They dissolve slightly more slowly but are equivalent for most applications. Both variants are available in the empty capsules category.
Do these capsules work with all capsule filling machines?
No. Size 1 capsules only fit in a size 1 capsule filling machine. If you use a machine of a different size, the capsule will not seal properly and you will fill it unevenly. The compatible size 1 capsule filling machine is available separately.
Can I also fill the capsules by hand without a machine?
Yes, that is possible but time-consuming and less accurate. You would then fill each capsule half manually and press them closed. This works for occasional use or small quantities, but for batches of 24 or more, a capsule filling machine is much more efficient and provides a more uniform fill.
