Harmine is a beta-carboline alkaloid naturally found in Peganum harmala (also known as Syrian rue) and in Banisteriopsis caapi, the vine known as a base ingredient of ayahuasca. In the scientific literature, harmine is described as a reversible, selective inhibitor of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). This isolate is a salt of harmine (harmine HCl) with a purity of 99%, obtained by isolating the alkaloid from the plant material.
