Absinthe, TPA alkaloid extract of Artemisia absinthium
Absinthe or wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a perennial plant from the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to the temperate regions of Europe, West Asia and North Africa. The herb has a long history as a bitter digestive herb and as the base ingredient of the spirit absinthe, which became hugely popular in France in the mid-nineteenth century. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), wormwood herb preparations are used, based on long-standing traditional use, for temporary loss of appetite and mild stomach and digestive complaints.
This extract is produced with the TPA method (Total Purified Alkaloids): the active plant compounds, including the bitter compound thujone, are isolated from the herb through several extraction and purification steps and then dissolved in an ethanol and water base. The result is a clear liquid extract without plant residue, wax or chlorophyll, more concentrated than an ordinary wormwood tincture.
Dosage
In high doses, thujone can cause convulsions; regulated absinthe spirit in France is therefore legally capped at 35 mg of thujone per litre. Partly because of this risk, we offer this extract, like our other Artemisia absinthium products, strictly as an ethnobotanical and herbal study product, and we do not give dosage advice.
Use
The extract is meant for anyone interested in the history and botany of wormwood, for study purposes or as an addition to a collection of ethnobotanical herbal extracts. Do not use this product during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have epilepsy or another seizure disorder, or if you are under 18. Do not combine it with alcohol or other herbal extracts from this range.
Storage
Store the extract cool, dark and upright with the cap closed, out of reach of children. Close the cap tightly after use to prevent the ethanol from evaporating and the concentration from changing. At Dutch-Smart you will also find other TPA alkaloid extracts such as Damiana, Happy Skullcap and Banisteriopsis caapi.
