Passionflower 20%, TPA alkaloid extract of Passiflora incarnata
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a woody climbing vine from the passionflower family (Passifloraceae), native to the southeastern United States, Central America and South America. Indigenous peoples used the herb long before European colonisation, after which it became known worldwide in herbal medicine via Europe. Passionflower is recognised in the European Union as a traditional herbal medicine for the relief of mild nervous tension (stress, restlessness, irritability) and to aid falling asleep.
Its main active compounds are flavonoids such as vitexin, isovitexin and orientin. Animal studies point to an effect on the GABA system, the same system targeted by benzodiazepines, which could explain the calming effect; this is a preliminary mechanism from animal studies, not an established medical claim. Human clinical research is limited in scale but generally reports less anxiety and tension compared with placebo.
This extract is made using the TPA method (Total Purified Alkaloids): the flavonoids are isolated from the herb through several extraction and purification steps to a concentration of 20% and then dissolved in an ethanol and water base. The result is a clear liquid extract without plant residue, wax or chlorophyll.
Dosage
Start with 5 to 10 drops (about 0.25-0.5 ml) per use and assess your reaction before increasing the dose; due to its high purity, this extract is stronger per volume than dried passionflower tea.
Use
The extract can be taken sublingually (drops under the tongue) or diluted in a small amount of water; the taste is sharp due to the ethanol content, so diluting makes it more pleasant to take. Do not combine passionflower with alcohol, sedative medication (such as benzodiazepines) or MAO inhibitors without consulting a doctor, and do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Passionflower can cause mild drowsiness; don't drive or operate machinery shortly after a higher dose.
Storage
Store the extract cool, dark and upright with the cap closed, out of reach of children. Close the cap tightly after use to prevent the ethanol from evaporating. At Dutch-Smart you will also find the alkaloid extracts of Valerian & GABA and Happy Skullcap in the same range, two other mild calming herbs.
