Psychedelics? We’ve got plenty of them here at Dutch-Smart! From magic truffles and magic mushrooms to the most intense psychedelic herbs, anyone looking for a trip will find exactly what they’re looking for here. This includes peyote, perhaps the most extraordinary cactus in the world. Peyote has been used for years by Native Americans, but the rest of the world isn’t very familiar with this psychoactive cactus. This unique cactus grows in northern Mexico and the southern United States. It grows very slowly, and it takes over five years for the cactus to be large enough for consumption. As for ornamental purposes? That’s not what it’s for…
Spiritual purposes
Peyote has been used for centuries by Native American tribes during religious rituals, but also as a remedy for thirst and hunger and during hunting to increase stamina. Scientifically known as Lophophora williamsii, peyote grows only in northern Mexico and two small regions in southern Texas. It grows underground, in the form of a sturdy cactus. Usually, only the crown of the plant is visible above ground, and its strong, bitter taste protects it from animals.
The real reason peyote is so revered and freely cultivated in Mexico stems from Native American cultures. There, the cactus has long been used in religious ceremonies. For thousands of years, Native Americans in Central and Northern Mexico have ingested peyote for spiritual purposes. The effects of the substance include heightened awareness, particularly of one’s surroundings and emotions. It is used to enhance emotions during healing and prayer ceremonies. They also use it to improve psychological well-being, for example, by conducting therapeutic conversations while under the influence of peyote.
Recreational users of peyote
It’s hard to find anyone today who hasn’t experimented with some form of drugs at least once in their life. But of all those drug trips (most of which clearly involve the wildly popular MDMA), almost no one has tried the peyote cactus. And that’s a shame, because peyote gives users a very special trip. One of the most common effects of a mescaline trip is nausea and loss of appetite. But of course, those aren’t the effects people are looking for. What are they? Visual and emotional changes. These include seeing bright colors and patterns, such as mosaic-like shapes and spirals, but also visions of more distinct objects like animals, people, and shapes.
Trip depends on dose
The size of the buds varies from the size of a golf ball to a baseball. Older plants are larger, but it is often believed that the smaller, younger plants are more potent. The effects of the peyote cactus are similar to those of various other hallucinogens. The effects, however, are highly dependent on the dose taken. Generally, 200–300 mg of mescaline is considered a “normal dose.” 300–500 mg is a strong dose, and 500–700 mg is a heavy dose that only experienced mescaline users will find enjoyable.
A full dose of peyote, approximately 400 milligrams with a mescaline content of one to three percent, could result in a trip lasting eight to twelve hours. However, inexperienced users are unlikely to reach that level. To consume a full dose, you need to eat between 10 and 12 buds or small slices of the inner peyote flesh. The taste is extremely bitter, with a texture like that of a pepper, so consuming it is not easy. On top of that, it also causes a very dry mouth. Not everyone’s cup of tea!
Is peyote legal?
Since the substance is used in Native American religious ceremonies, its use for religious purposes is legal in the United States, but recreational use is not officially permitted. In the Netherlands, the manufacture, sale, and possession of the active ingredient mescaline are prohibited, but the possession of mescaline-containing cacti is completely legal. So ordering peyote, San Pedro, or Peruvian Torch is perfectly possible in our smartshop!
