Many people swear by it: the combination of sex and drugs. In some cases, psychedelics can heighten the intensity of these exciting escapades to unprecedented levels. But what’s the deal with magic mushrooms? These mushrooms contain the active ingredient psilocybin and/or psilocin and are considered perfect psychedelics, though they’re probably not the first drugs that come to mind when you’re looking for a sexy night.
Dutch-Smart decided to investigate and asked a few magic mushroom users what it’s like to have sex during a magic mushroom trip. Among others, we spoke with experienced user Nick (25): “Before this night, I had already tripped on magic mushrooms several times. However, I had never had sex during such a night. After my girlfriend and I started our adventure, we felt great very quickly. Our focus was, more than ever before, purely on the sex. I also noticed that neither of us got tired at all during sex and that—at least for me—coming wasn’t very easy. The feeling itself was perfect. Maybe it was due to the altered perception of time, but we could go on endlessly, and it felt like one big sexual dream. An intimate must-try.”
The science behind sex and magic mushrooms
Anyway, don’t just take it from this expert by experience! Ask the experts… “Sex, like everything else while using psychedelics, is amplified,” says Neal Goldsmith, a New York-based psychologist and author of Psychedelic Healing. “Psychedelics enhance what’s already there; they bring you into contact with reality with more clarity and intensity than you generally experience.” And precisely because sex is so different from everyday activities, such as “building a sandcastle,” sex while tripping can be “emotional, hormonal, or psychological.”
“You never know what to expect when you’re tripping,” the psychologist continues. “That’s part of tripping. The surrender, having a philosophical attitude toward things to come.” One moment you might feel incredibly at ease, while something small could completely change your trip. “Nuances in voices or facial expressions might affect you in a way that wouldn’t happen if you weren’t in a different state of consciousness or perception. Of course, that can also be very positive,” he says. But perhaps it’s wise for beginners planning to have psychedelic sex to wait until after climax to start the trip, he advises.
Down-to-earth sex
Psychedelics like LSD and magic mushrooms alter the way you experience touch and other senses. Former Harvard professor Timothy Leary once said in an interview with Playboy that “LSD is the most powerful aphrodisiac known to mankind.” Goldsmith, for his part, believes that sex during a magic mushroom trip is a bit more “down to earth,” which makes it the go-to drug for many people when they want to trip during sex. It’s no surprise, then, that people are growing their own magic mushrooms at home in droves.
Twenty-four-year-old Ellis also tells Dutch-Smart that having sex during a magic mushroom trip is a unique experience. “But definitely one worth repeating. The sex itself sometimes felt a bit strange and maybe even a little surreal. My boyfriend found the orgasm very unusual, while I described it more as ‘the best thing ever.’ It was an intense night, and at the same time, I felt like we grew very close as a couple. We already experience that effect with magic mushrooms anyway, but the sex made that feeling even more intense.”
