You had a fun party where a joint was passed around. And then you remember that drug test scheduled in a few weeks—for work, school, or your driver’s license. What exactly is the deal? How long does THC remain detectable? What do labs look for in a urine test? And what can you do to improve your chances? In this article, we explain it all, including products you can use at home to assess your own situation.
How long does THC remain detectable in urine?
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis. Unlike many other drugs, THC is fat-soluble: it is stored in fat cells and is released gradually. This means that THC remains detectable for significantly longer than water-soluble substances.
A standard urine test does not look for THC itself, but for the metabolite THC-COOH (11-nor-9-carboxy-THC). The detection limit for most tests is 50 ng/ml. How long THC-COOH remains detectable depends on several factors: frequency of use, body fat percentage, metabolism, hydration, and the amount consumed.
General guidelines for detection windows in urine:
- Single use: 3 to 5 days
- Weekly use: 5 to 10 days
- Daily use: 10 to 30 days
- Heavy, chronic use: 30 to 90 days in some cases
For saliva tests, the detection window is shorter (typically 24 to 72 hours after last use). Blood tests detect THC itself, not the metabolite, and remain positive for 1 to 7 days. Hair tests have the longest window: up to 90 days, but are rarely used in the Netherlands.
What do laboratories look for in a urine test?
A professional laboratory not only tests for the presence of drugs but also checks whether the urine sample has been tampered with. These are the parameters they check:
pH level
Normal urine has a pH between 4.5 and 8.5, with an average around 6. Household products (bleach, vinegar, soap) that are sometimes added to sabotage the test shift the pH outside this range. Laboratories recognize this immediately. So don’t try it.
Creatinine
Creatinine is a waste product from the muscles that is excreted in a constant amount through urine. In diluted urine (due to excessive water intake), the creatinine level drops below the threshold value (usually 20 mg/dL). That’s a red flag. You can increase creatinine levels by eating red meat in the days leading up to the test; red meat is rich in creatine, which is converted into creatinine in the body.
Color and Clarity
Urine that is too clear or watery raises suspicion of dilution. This does not necessarily result from manipulation; it can also be the result of drinking a lot of water. Take a vitamin B complex on the day of the test: this gives the urine a yellow color without altering its composition.
Temperature
Fresh urine has a temperature between 32 and 38°C. Laboratories measure this within 4 minutes of collection. Urine that is too cold or too warm will be rejected. This is relevant if you are considering using synthetic urine (see below).
Adulterants
Laboratories test for oxidants, surfactants, and other chemical additives. Specialized "masking agents" sold online are now detected by most labs.
Preparation: The 16-Day Plan
If you know you have a urine test in two to three weeks and you’ve recently used cannabis, you can take the following steps to lower your THC-COOH levels as much as possible. Note: this is not a guarantee; the result depends on your personal situation.
Days 1 to 10: Fat burning
THC-COOH is stored in fat cells. By burning fat, you mobilize the stored metabolites so they are excreted through urine. The three pillars of this phase:
Intense exercise. Do at least 30 to 45 minutes of cardio daily: running, cycling, swimming, or a combination. The goal is to sweat and burn fat. The more intense the exercise, the more fat you burn.
Sauna. After exercising, you can do two 10-minute sessions in the sauna, with a cold shower in between. The sauna accelerates sweating and thus the excretion of fat-soluble substances. Drink plenty of water in between to prevent dehydration.
Hydration. Drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water throughout the day. This helps your kidneys flush out waste products. Don’t overdo it: more than 4 liters a day can lead to water intoxication (hyponatremia).
Days 11 to 14: Fat accumulation
This may sound counterintuitive, but in the final days before the test, you actually want to stop burning fat. Why? Fat burning mobilizes THC-COOH from fat cells into the bloodstream and subsequently into the urine. If you keep training right up until the day of the test, there will be more metabolites in your urine than if you take a few days off.
During this phase, eat a high-calorie diet (including healthy fats), stop intense exercise, and avoid the sauna. Drink normally (not excessively) and eat red meat to maintain creatinine levels.
The day before and the day of the test
The evening before the test: eat red meat, take a B-complex vitamin, and drink water as usual. On the morning of the test: drink some extra water so that you have urinated at least 2 to 3 times before submitting the test sample. The first morning urine contains the highest concentration of metabolites, so you don’t want to use that as your test sample. Preferably submit the middle portion of the urine stream (midstream), not the beginning or the end.
Testing Yourself Before the Test
Want to know where you stand before the official test? Then you can use a THC urine test strip at home. This is a rapid test that indicates within minutes whether the THC-COOH level in your urine is above the detection limit of 50 ng/ml. Two lines: negative (below the threshold). One line: positive (above the threshold).
In addition to the THC test, we also offer a cocaine urine test strip for those who want to prepare for a test that screens for multiple substances. A urine cup with a screw-top lid makes collecting and storing your sample hygienic and practical.
It’s wise to take several self-tests in the weeks leading up to the official test so you can track how your THC-COOH level decreases. Test preferably in the morning (highest concentration) to get a worst-case scenario.
Screeny Weenie: synthetic urine as a Plan B
If the home test still comes back positive right before the deadline, there is an alternative: synthetic urine. The Screeny Weeny 6.0 from CleanU is a kit consisting of synthetic urine (CleanUrin), a heating pad to bring the urine to body temperature, and a realistic prosthesis for men that allows the sample to be provided under visual supervision.
For women, there is the ScreenUrin 2.0 Set Women, which works on a similar principle but without a prosthesis and with a different delivery system that is more discreet for the female anatomy.
Synthetic urine mimics the composition of real urine: the pH, creatinine level, specific gravity, and color correspond to normal values. The heating pad brings the liquid to the correct temperature (32 to 38°C). This is important because temperature is one of the first things a laboratory checks.
Important: The Screeny Weenie and ScreenUrin kits are intended for urine tests. They are not suitable for saliva tests, blood tests, or hair tests.
Detection windows per substance
It’s not just THC that’s tested. Here’s an overview of the detection windows for the most common substances in a standard urine test:
- THC (cannabis): 3 to 90 days, depending on frequency of use
- Cocaine: 2 to 4 days (with occasional use), up to 14 days with heavy use
- MDMA/XTC: 2 to 4 days
- Amphetamine/speed: 2 to 5 days
- Opiates (heroin, codeine): 2 to 4 days
- Benzodiazepines: 3 to 30 days, depending on the specific substance
- Ketamine: 2 to 4 days
- Psilocybin: Not included in standard panels. Rarely tested.
More drug tests, from THC and cocaine to LSD and opiates, can be found in the drug testing category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does drinking a lot of water help you pass a drug test?
Drinking water temporarily dilutes your urine, lowering the THC-COOH level per milliliter. However, labs check for dilution by measuring creatinine levels and specific gravity. If these are too low, your sample will be flagged as “diluted” and you’ll have to retake the test. So don’t drink excessively on the day of the test itself, but combine normal hydration with red meat (creatinine) and vitamin B (color).
Do detox drinks or pills work?
There are many products on the market that claim to “detox” your body of THC. The scientific evidence for this is limited. Most detox products work by temporarily increasing your kidneys’ output (diuretic effect) and contain vitamins and creatine to mask the dilution. This is essentially the same as drinking plenty of water combined with vitamin B and red meat, but more expensive.
Can passive smoking cause a positive test result?
In theory, it is possible, but in practice highly unlikely given the standard threshold of 50 ng/ml. Studies show that levels can only exceed the threshold with extreme, prolonged exposure in an unventilated space. A single instance of secondhand smoke at a party is not enough to produce a positive result.
Is synthetic urine legal?
In the Netherlands, the possession and use of synthetic urine are not criminal offenses. It is a freely available product. However, in certain types of drug tests (for example, in the context of probation or the justice system), the use of synthetic urine may be considered fraud, with legal consequences. The situation is different for a drug test conducted by an employer or educational institution: there is no legal prohibition, but detection can obviously have consequences for your position.
How do I know which test I’ll take?
The most common drug test in the Netherlands is the urine immunoassay, a rapid test that screens for multiple substance groups at once (typically THC, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and sometimes benzodiazepines). If this test is positive, a confirmatory test is often performed using GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) or LC-MS/MS, which determines the exact substance and concentration. Saliva tests are primarily used during traffic stops. Hair tests are rare in the Netherlands but are used in certain reintegration programs.
