Devil's Claw 10:1 Extract

Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a root herb from the Kalahari desert in southern Africa, long part of the traditional herbal knowledge of the Khoisan peoples. For this extract, the dried root has been concentrated through a 10:1 extraction process: every 10 grams of root material yields 1 gram of extract powder, with a higher concentration of the active iridoid glycosides harpagoside and harpagide than in the uncut root.

Because it is an extract, you need considerably less material than the raw root to reach a comparable concentration. The extract powder dissolves well in hot water and, like the raw root, has a distinctly bitter taste.

Dosage

Because this is a 10:1 extract, a fraction of the amount of raw root is sufficient. Start with a small amount, for example the tip of a teaspoon, and only build up once you know how you respond to it.

Use

Dissolve the powder in hot water to make a tea, or use it to fill an empty capsule of your choice. Devil's Claw is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in combination with blood thinners; consult a doctor or pharmacist if in doubt.

Storage

Store the extract dry, dark and airtight in its original packaging.
