Yesterday we told you how valerian can help you get through the week feeling completely relaxed, but here at Dutch-Smart we have plenty more in store to help you unwind. Today in the spotlight: our wonderful incense! In our headshop, we sell a wide variety of incense in countless different scents, but you can also find incense holders and so-called revitalizers there.

What is incense used for?

Incense is a blend of fragrant substances such as resins, essential oils, woods, and herbs, which release a pleasant scent when lit. The word comes from “wijrook,” which in turn is related to the word “wijden” (to consecrate). As early as centuries before Christ, it was used as an incense offering to please the gods. During prayer, the scent and the words of the prayer rose upward. This fragrance is still frequently used in the Catholic Church, but you can of course use it at home for all sorts of purposes as well.

In the past, incense came from the Middle East, but the incense sticks and cones we use at home today come from Eastern countries such as India, Tibet, and China, where fragrances hold great religious, spiritual, and medicinal value. In our country, many people use incense scents to relax at home after a busy day while enjoying a good book, music, or a warm bath. This helps clear your mind, allows you to fully unwind, and encourages more positive thinking.

Relaxing and stimulating

Taking a moment to completely unwind every now and then is great for both body and mind, and some people report benefiting from burning incense to relieve mental and physical ailments. A pleasant scent also takes you out of your routine, stimulates your imagination, and can even boost your creativity! So, a quick look in our headshop is definitely not a luxury.

Of course, people often have a practical reason for burning incense as well, namely to eliminate unpleasant odors from pets or the smell of cigarette smoke. White sage and sage incense are also popular for spiritually cleansing your home of negative energies. Some people believe that sage can guide the energies of the deceased to the other world. It is wise not to use incense excessively, as this can be harmful to the respiratory system.

Types of incense for different purposes

Each type of incense is known for its own unique properties. Sandalwood is widely used in temples and is ideal for those who wish to meditate. During meditation, scents like sandalwood can help improve your focus and allow you to concentrate on your breathing. Lavender, on the other hand, has a calming effect and is ideal for bedtime. But the options are endless! How about patchouli, jasmine, rosemary, and vanilla, for example? Name any herb, and chances are it’s been turned into a delightful incense. Our Ayurveda incense, for example, is specifically designed to help you find harmony and peace. Which one you prefer is, of course, very personal. Traditionally, incense has been used in many cultures to let your worries fade away in smoke and to enhance your sense of happiness. Are you curious? Try it for yourself!
