Sterile Scalpel for Harvesting Mushrooms

This sterile scalpel consists of a plastic handle with a disposable stainless steel blade, individually sterile packed. You use it to cut the fruit bodies off your mushroom grow kit instead of pulling them loose, which lowers the risk of damaging the substrate and of contamination.

Why a sterile scalpel

Pulling fruit bodies off by hand often damages the surrounding mycelium and can create small tears in the substrate, exactly the spots where bacteria and unwanted mould take hold most easily. A sharp scalpel cuts through the base of the fruit body in one motion, with minimal damage to the rest of the grow. Because the blade stays sterile packed until the moment of use, you also avoid transferring germs from previously used tools onto the substrate.

Use

Only open the sterile packaging right before you harvest, and do not touch the blade with your fingers. Cut the fruit bodies close to the base of the substrate in one smooth motion rather than sawing back and forth. Combine the scalpel with sterile gloves and work with calm movements so you do not accidentally cut into the surrounding substrate. Use one scalpel per harvest session; grab a fresh one for the next flush or a different grow tub.

Care and storage

The scalpel is intended for single use: dispose of the blade after harvesting, even if it still looks sharp, since reuse brings back the contamination risk. Store unused scalpels dry and in their sealed packaging until needed, and check before use that the sterile packaging is not damaged.
