Lowlands, Mysteryland, Dekmantel: what goes in your bag?
August and September are festival months in the Netherlands. Lowlands (21-23 August), Mysteryland, Dekmantel, Vunzige Deansen, Paradigm: tens of thousands of people pack a tent and go all out for three days. At Dutch-Smart, we see it in the order numbers. From mid-July onwards, test kit, trip stopper and energiser sales spike hard. Makes sense: if you are spending three days on a festival site, you want to be prepared.
This is not a lecture and not a dull safety warning. It is a practical checklist from our shop: five products we would pack ourselves, and why exactly these five.
1. A test kit for your pills (from EUR 2.27)
Sounds obvious, but the numbers are not reassuring. The DIMS (Drug Information and Monitoring System, run by the Dutch Trimbos Institute) publishes quarterly reports on submitted pills. Composition varies wildly: MDMA content ranges from under 50 mg to above 250 mg per pill, and unexpected substances show up regularly. In 2025, dozens of pills were flagged containing a mix of MDMA and synthetic cathinones.
The official testing service (34 locations across the Netherlands, free and anonymous) is a solid option, but you need to go during the week, waiting times increase sharply during festival season, and on-site testing at festivals has not been allowed since 1999. That means: either test before the festival, or bring your own kit.
The Ecstasy/XTC Test by Dope or Nope costs EUR 2.27 and detects the presence of MDMA/MDA in a pill or powder. It is not a purity test (for that, see the General Drug Test), but it tells you whether MDMA is present at all. For EUR 2.27, that is a lot of certainty. More on how testing works in our article on how to test your own drugs.
Important: a colour reaction test gives an indication, not a lab result. It detects the presence of a substance group, not the exact dose. If in doubt, use the official testing service.
2. The Bad Trip Stopper (EUR 3.58)
You hope you will not need it. But if you are on a festival field and someone next to you panics from an unexpectedly strong truffle or a high-dose pill, you want something in your bag.
The Bad Trip Stopper contains a combination of valerian, maltodextrin and vitamin C. Not a magic bullet that ends a trip, but it helps calm the nervous system and gives the person something concrete to do (take a capsule, drink water, focus). That action alone breaks the panic cycle for many people.
With psilocybin trips, it works best combined with a quiet environment and a sober companion. On a busy festival, that is harder, but the stopper plus a quiet spot at the edge of the site plus a familiar voice is a workable combination. We wrote about the mechanics behind bad trips and how to prevent them in this article.
3. Party-E or Dance-E: the festival energy you need (EUR 7.36)
Day one runs on adrenaline. Day two runs on coffee. Day three needs help. Three days of festival is physically demanding: short sleep in a hot tent, hours of standing, poor food, and then dancing until three in the morning.
Party-E by Happy Caps (4 capsules, EUR 7.36) combines guarana, theobromine and amino acids into a boost that lasts 4 to 6 hours without the crash of an energy drink. Guarana releases caffeine more gradually than coffee: less peak, longer effect. Dance-E follows the same principle but is slightly subtler, more of a mood lift than raw energy.
Dance-E works well as an evening option when you want to dance but do not want to lie wide awake in your tent at five in the morning. Party-E is the Friday night, Dance-E the Saturday night. Do not exceed the recommended dose (4 capsules per 24 hours) and avoid combining with large amounts of caffeine or alcohol.
4. CleanUrin: for when you have a test on Monday (EUR 10.33)
It is a reality nobody enjoys discussing. More and more employers in construction, transport and healthcare test for drug use, sometimes unannounced. A festival weekend on Friday, a urine test on Tuesday: the detection window for MDMA in urine is 2 to 4 days, for THC it can be weeks.
CleanUrin (25 ml, EUR 10.33) is synthetic urine that falls within normal ranges for pH, specific gravity and creatinine levels. It comes with a heating pad to bring it to body temperature (one of the first things checked during a urine test).
We sell this product, but we are honest about it: it is an emergency measure, not a structural solution. And its use in an employer test sits in a legal grey area. Always check your employment contract and applicable collective labour agreement before making decisions.
5. After E: surviving the morning after (EUR 3.58)
The dip after MDMA use has a biochemical cause. MDMA depletes your serotonin reserves in a matter of hours. In the days that follow, your body has too little serotonin to function normally, resulting in low mood, fatigue, irritability, sometimes headaches. The notorious "Tuesday blues".
After E (EUR 3.58) contains 5-HTP (the direct precursor to serotonin), vitamin B6 and magnesium. 5-HTP crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into serotonin. The idea: give your body the building blocks to replenish what was used up.
Timing matters. Do not take After E at the same time as MDMA (combining 5-HTP with MDMA increases the risk of serotonin syndrome, a rare but serious condition). Wait at least 6 hours after your last dose. Ideal moment: the morning after. Drink plenty of water with it. More on post-festival recovery in our article about the day after the party.
Besides After E, there is After C (aimed at cocaine use) and After D (a broader afterparty supplement). Choose based on what you used.
The short version: your festival checklist

Party-E or Dance-E (EUR 7.36): three days of energy without the crash.
CleanUrin (EUR 10.33): for when Monday brings you back to reality.
After E (EUR 3.58): dampen the Tuesday dip.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring test kits to a festival?
Yes. A test kit contains chemical reagents, not illegal substances. There is no legal restriction on possessing test kits. Some festivals check bags at the entrance; a test kit will not cause issues.
Can I combine After E with Party-E?
Yes, as long as you do not take them at the same time. Party-E for the evening, After E the next morning. Do not use Party-E as a substitute for sleep: three nights without sleep is more harmful than a post-festival dip.
How do I store CleanUrin at a festival?
The product is shelf-stable at room temperature. Keep it in an inner pocket of your bag, out of direct sunlight. Activate the heating pad only just before use; it keeps the liquid at temperature for 6 to 8 hours.
Are there new DIMS warnings this festival season?
The DIMS publishes ongoing warnings at drugsinfo.nl. Check that website in the week before your festival. In 2025, there were multiple warnings for extremely high-dosed MDMA pills (above 200 mg) and for pills containing unexpected additives.
