The world's most popular cubensis strain, and there's a good reason for that
There are dozens of Psilocybe cubensis varieties on the market. Yet one has been sitting at the top for decades: the Golden Teacher. At Dutch-Smart, it is our bestselling grow kit, and virtually every other smartshop tells the same story. There is a history behind that popularity that goes beyond marketing.
In this article, we take a close look at the Golden Teacher. Not with vague promises, but with concrete numbers: yield per flush, potency, dosage guidelines and six growing tips that make the difference between a disappointing first harvest and a full tub.
Origin: a mysterious find in Florida
The Golden Teacher appeared on the American cultivation scene in the late 1980s. The most commonly told story: someone found a striking specimen with a broad, golden cap in a humid pasture in southeastern Florida. Spore prints from that specimen circulated through the underground spore-trading network of the time, and within a few years "Golden Teacher" had become a household name on every mycology forum.
The name refers to two things: the characteristic golden-caramel colour of the cap, and the reputation among users that this strain produces reflective, insight-driven experiences rather than purely visual trips. "Teacher" because it feels like you learn something, not because anything supernatural is going on.
Who the original cultivator was, nobody knows for certain. That fits the mycology culture of the era: it was about the spores, not the fame.
Why beginners almost always choose the Golden Teacher
Three properties make this strain particularly suited as a first introduction to mushroom cultivation:
1. Forgiving of growing mistakes. The Golden Teacher colonises quickly and tolerates fluctuations in temperature and humidity better than sensitive strains like the McKennaii or Copelandia. Forget to fan once? With most strains, that marks the beginning of the end. With the Golden Teacher, it merely produces a slightly smaller flush.
2. Reliable yield. A 2100cc kit produces an average of 400 to 700 grams of fresh mushrooms, spread across 3 to 4 flushes. The first flush is typically the largest; each subsequent one yields roughly 30 to 50 percent less. That is normal and not a sign that something has gone wrong.
3. Mild potency. With a psilocybin content of 0.5 to 0.9 percent by dry weight, the Golden Teacher sits in the middle range. For comparison: a Penis Envy contains two to three times as much. For a first growing and trip experience, that is exactly what you want: enough strength to feel it, not so much that it becomes overwhelming.
Effects: what to expect
Users describe the Golden Teacher trip as warm, calm and introspective. The visual component is present but not dominant: gentle colour shifts, light patterns behind closed eyes, a kind of glow across your surroundings. The body effect, by contrast, is strong: a wave of relaxation that spreads through your entire body.
The trip lasts an average of 4 to 6 hours, peaking after about 60 to 90 minutes. Onset sits between 20 and 60 minutes after ingestion, depending on whether you eat on an empty stomach (faster, more intense) or after a light meal (more gradual).
What many people notice: the Golden Teacher does not deliver the wild visual fireworks of a McKennaii or a Copelandia Hawaiian. What it does offer is space to think. People report insights about personal patterns, relationships, stress factors. Hence the name "teacher".

Dosage: from microdose to strong trip
The guidelines below apply to dried Golden Teacher. Fresh mushrooms contain approximately 90% water, so multiply the dry dose by 10 for an equivalent fresh amount.
Microdose: 0.1 to 0.3 grams dry. No noticeable trip, but subtle changes in focus and mood. Popular every third day.
Light: 0.5 to 1 gram dry. Mild euphoria, sharper colours, a smile that refuses to fade. Good for a first experience.
Medium: 1 to 2 grams dry. The standard experience. Visual effects, emotional openness, 4 to 5 hours.
Strong: 2 to 3.5 grams dry. Intense trip with strong visuals and deep introspection. Only for experienced users in a safe setting.
Heroic (5+ grams): Not recommended without experience and a sober trip sitter. The line between transformative and overwhelming is thin here.
Six growing tips specific to the Golden Teacher
1. Temperature: 22 to 25 degrees, consistent
The Golden Teacher is more tolerant than most strains, but "tolerant" does not mean "indestructible". Below 20 degrees, growth slows considerably. Above 28 degrees, the risk of bacterial contamination rises. A low-power heating mat under the tub solves the problem in winter.
2. Harvest when the veil tears
The membrane between cap and stem (the veil) tears when the mushroom is fully grown. At that moment, psilocybin concentration is at its highest. Wait too long and the cap releases spores: harmless, but it leaves a black, messy layer over the rest of the kit and yields start to decline.
3. The first flush is not always the biggest
Many Golden Teacher growers find that the second flush is the most productive. So do not be discouraged if the first round is modest. After harvesting: soak the kit for 12 hours in cold water ("cold shock"), drain, and start again.
4. Air circulation without draughts
CO2 accumulates in the growing space. Too much CO2 produces long, thin stems with small caps, known as "fuzzy feet". Open the grow bag briefly twice a day and fan with your hand. Do not aim a fan directly at the kit.
5. Mist the walls, not the mushrooms
Water on the caps causes bacterial spots. Mist the inside of the grow bag so that droplets sit on the plastic, not on the mushrooms themselves. That evaporation keeps humidity at the right level (90 to 95 percent).
6. Hygiene is half the battle
Wash your hands, wear gloves, work with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Contamination is the primary reason kits fail, not temperature or light. Green or black spots on the substrate? Stop immediately: that kit is lost.

Golden Teacher vs. other strains
How does the Golden Teacher compare to the other grow kits in our range?
B+: Similar difficulty level, slightly larger mushrooms, but less consistent yield. Potency is virtually identical.
McKennaii: More potent than the Golden Teacher (more visual, more intense), but more sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Not ideal as a first kit.
Ecuador: Grows well at lower temperatures (18 to 23 degrees), handy if you do not have a heated room. Potency comparable to the Golden Teacher.
Copelandia Hawaiian (Panaeolus cyanescens): An entirely different species, not a cubensis. Far more potent, far harder to grow. Only for advanced growers.
The Golden Teacher sits in the sweet spot: potent enough to be serious, easy enough to succeed as a first project.
Legal status in the Netherlands
The rules around psilocybin in the Netherlands are specific. Since 1 December 2008, the fruiting bodies of psilocybin-containing mushrooms have been listed on Schedule II of the Opium Act. This means that fresh and dried mushrooms are illegal to possess.
Grow kits do not fall under this classification. They contain mycelium, not fruiting bodies, and are therefore legally available. The mushrooms you grow from them are subsequently intended for personal use. Spore syringes and spore prints are likewise legal, since spores contain no psilocybin.
Magic truffles (sclerotia) are a separate matter: they are freely available in fresh form because they were not included in the 2008 ban. Dried truffles, however, fall under Schedule I due to the concentration process.
The NPS law that took effect on 1 July 2025 targets synthetic substances and does not affect psilocybin-containing products.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my Golden Teacher grow kit produces the first mushrooms?
Expect 10 to 14 days after opening the kit for the first pinheads. From pinhead to harvest takes another 5 to 7 days. Total: 2 to 3 weeks for the first flush.
Can I dry Golden Teacher mushrooms for later use?
Yes. Dry them on a rack at room temperature with good air circulation, or use a food dehydrator at 35 to 40 degrees. Cracker-dry is the goal: they should snap when you bend them. Store airtight with a silica gel packet. Keep in mind that possession of dried mushrooms in the Netherlands falls under the Opium Act.
My kit only produces small mushrooms with long stems. What am I doing wrong?
This is almost always a CO2 problem. The mushrooms stretch upward searching for oxygen. Fan more often, more actively, and ensure the grow bag is not completely sealed.
Is the Golden Teacher suitable for microdosing?
Yes, and it is one of the most popular strains for that purpose. The mild, predictable potency makes it easier to weigh a consistent microdose (0.1 to 0.3 grams dry, every third day). Use a precision scale (0.01 gram accuracy).
