The new year has been underway for a little while now, which means New Year’s resolutions are in full swing once again. Going to bed earlier, snacking less, spending less time on social media… these are all common resolutions. But if there’s one resolution that stands head and shoulders above the rest, it’s living a healthier lifestyle and exercising more often. Today, we’re going to talk about a unique combination: cannabis and sports. A good idea, or best to skip it?

More endurance
First of all, we don’t want to encourage anyone to use cannabis or any other substance. But let’s be honest: if you’ve landed here on Dutch-Smart, there’s a good chance you enjoy a nice joint or a hit from the bong every now and then. That said, let’s dive into one of the most significant effects of cannabis on your athletic performance. A 2019 study, published in Frontiers in Public Health, found that people who used cannabis before starting their workout generally lasted longer than those who began their workout completely sober.
Participants reported that cannabis helped motivate them to exercise and also made the activity more enjoyable. If you’re the type of person who just lies around on the couch when you’re high, you probably don’t get this at all. Still, marijuana users exercised an average of 2.5 hours more than people who didn’t use cannabis before or after working out. Well, the numbers don’t lie.

The ideal time to start
Now that we’re back in the middle of a lockdown and stuck at home en masse, a home workout routine seems perfect for this moment. Plus, it’s a lot easier to dose your cannabis at home than it would be, say, at the gym (where joints aren’t exactly welcome…). That said, we generally advise against lifting heavy weights like dumbbells or kettlebells while under the influence. But how about some jumping jacks to get started? Anyone can do that, even with a stoned head! (Just be careful not to fall over…)
Another big advantage of working out at home while enjoying a joint is that you don’t have to worry at all about what other people think of you. At home, you feel safe, comfortable, and you can simply take another puff if you want. And if it all gets to be a bit too much? Then you can just plop down on the couch and call it a day. Just watch out for those darn munchies, because they’ll completely ruin your entire workout, of course.
