As many Dutch-Smart users know, Salvia Divinorum is one of the most extraordinary plants in the world. According to many, it is even the most powerful hallucinogen in existence, and its use must therefore be very carefully prepared. But did you also know that none other than Miley Cyrus once helped boost sales of Salvia like never before?

Miley’s adult life...

Let’s take you back to 2010—a full 10 years ago. Former Disney star Miley Cyrus, then still better known to many as Hannah Montana, caused quite a stir by shattering her Disney image. Just a few weeks after turning 18, a video began circulating in which the singer celebrated her adult life with uncontrollable laughter, slurred speech, and a nice bong. This bong wasn’t filled with marijuana or hashish, but with Salvia Divinorum, a powerful psychedelic substance that can be legally purchased and used in California (and in the Netherlands).

But it was precisely this controversial video of the Disney star that sparked a significant surge in interest in the psychoactive Mexican herb. As a result, Google searches for “salvia” or “sage” surged by about 600 percent in the days that followed, and it was trending on Twitter, with the incident discussed on numerous news sites and on Saturday Night Live. However unintended it may have been, the fact that actual celebrities dared to try the herb sparked a massive rush for the extremely hallucinogenic plant.

“We normally sold one or two portions a day,” said an employee at a local shop that sold the herb. “Now it’s 10 or 15, mostly groups of young people and Miley fans,” he continued in an interview with The New York Times.

Extreme and intense

In recent decades, the herb’s popularity has surged. Evidence of this can be found on YouTube, where there are countless videos of young people in the midst of their salvia trip—not always a pleasant experience, by the way. Although the intense trip—which can last up to about 30 minutes—is often described as otherworldly and extreme, it is not an experience that everyone wants to repeat or try. The herb is simply incredibly intense and can also cause anxiety and panic. Proponents of the herb, on the other hand, call it a magical experience.

Salvinorin A, the active ingredient in Salvia Divinorum, is exceptionally potent. A dose of just a few hundred micrograms (millionths of a gram) will already have an effect, and a dose above 1 milligram is too much for most people to use comfortably. Fortunately, Salvia leaves are many times weaker than pure salvinorin A, making them easier to use, as long as certain rules and tips are followed. Thorough research on the herb is therefore an absolute must before you use it. Be sure to check out the Salvia wiki in our knowledge base.
