A few months ago, Denver, Colorado became the first city in the United States to decriminalize psilocybin. Psilocybin is—as most of you Dutch Smarters know—the compound that gives magic mushrooms and magic truffles their hallucinogenic properties. Now, a startup in the same city is introducing something new: actual psilocybin coffee and tea.
After CBD coffee, now magic mushroom coffee too!
This isn’t the first time the American company Sträva Craft Coffee has come up with something remarkable. In 2017, the company began selling real CBD coffee. With the new psilocybin coffee and tea, they’re taking steps toward an even more unique service offering. “Just as cannabis has been misunderstood and controversial for decades, psilocybin from mushrooms is equally polarizing,” said Sträva CEO Andrew Aamot in a press release. “But proponents of both substances suggest that they can meaningfully contribute to human experiences. As research shows, consuming cannabis and psilocybin can promote physiological, mental, and spiritual health.”
When used in small doses, psilocybin has shown promise in treating patients with severe depression and anxiety disorders, according to various studies and research. Strava plans to infuse coffee and tea with “microdoses of psilocybin,” according to the announcement. So you won’t get a real psychedelic trip from the coffee—the doses are simply too low for that. Microdosing involves taking very small doses of psychedelic substances such as LSD, magic mushrooms, or truffles as part of daily life. Too little to cause a trip or hallucinations, but enough to notice subtle effects such as increased productivity, creativity, and focus.
Psychedelics as Medicine
Much recent research confirms the positive effects of psychedelics on conditions such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, addiction, and eating disorders. But since not everyone is looking for a 6-hour psychedelic trip, people have increasingly sought ways to access the benefits of psychedelics without undergoing an intense trip. Microdosing is the result. In the Dutch Smart online smartshop, we’ve recently started selling convenient Microdosing packs, so you can experience the effects of these special substances in low doses yourself!
Despite Sträva’s press release citing several studies on the medical benefits of psilocybin, the science surrounding many psychedelic substances is still in its infancy. In recent years, however, there has been significant growth in medical research on psychedelic substances such as DMT, LSD, and psilocybin. Whatever the future may bring: we’re pretty sure that psychedelics will play an increasingly important role in the treatment of numerous physical and mental conditions. And Dutch Smart is, of course, fully behind that!
Want to make your own psilocybin coffee?
Would you like to experiment with microdosing psilocybin in your coffee or tea? There are a few ways to do this. The most popular method is to simply mix the ground mushrooms or truffles into your coffee—or to let the truffles steep in boiled water. Easy as that!
