Many visitors to Dutch-Smart are no strangers to recreational drug use. A pill (or ecstasy substitute) here, a magic mushroom there… anything goes. However, the drug that’s probably used the most is cannabis. This wonderful herb can be consumed in countless different ways. The best-known methods are, of course, smoking it in a joint, bong, or hookah, or eating it in, for example, a space cake or space brownie. In recent years, however, another method has emerged that is rapidly gaining popularity: vaping cannabis. Many believe this method is both more effective and more discreet, but that’s not all...

Why vape cannabis?

Decades of research have shown that substances found in smoke are extremely harmful to human health. Think of the release of toxins, irritants, tar, and various carcinogens. For example, it has been amply proven that tar damages the lungs, airways, and mouth. In short: lighting up a joint is enjoyable, but it’s not really healthy—quite the opposite. Vaping is the modern alternative to “smoking” weed. When vaping or vaporizing, you heat the herb to specific temperatures just below the combustion point in a vaporizer or e-cigarette so that the vapors can be inhaled. Curious to know why this is better? Then read on…

1. Less exposure to harmful substances

Marijuana vapor contains significantly less tar, carcinogens, and other toxic byproducts than marijuana smoke. Burning plant material creates a multitude of compounds that are harmful to human health. When these substances are vaporized instead of burned, exposure to these compounds is significantly lower. Is vaping cannabis 100% safe? No, certainly not. By vaporizing your marijuana, you will still be exposed to a small fraction of the toxic byproducts you would be exposed to if you were smoking. Exactly how much that exposure is remains unclear at this time, but new research should hopefully shed light on this in the near future.

2. Vaping weed is cheaper than smoking weed

Yes, you can get a joint for just a few euros, but buying one of those “expensive” vaporizers is much better for your wallet in the long run. Why? Well, for a number of reasons. For starters, cannabis vapor contains an 80% higher concentration of cannabinoids than cannabis smoke. In other words: for the same hit, the effect is much greater. Reason two: By using a vaporizer, the vapor goes directly from the herb chamber to your mouth without having a chance to disperse into the air. For example, when you smoke a joint, some cannabinoids simply disappear into the air because of the smoke. In short, a vaporizer simply ensures that you use less cannabis to achieve the same “high.”

3. Vaping cannabis produces a more pronounced flavor

When you choose to vaporize cannabis, in most cases you’ll experience a much more pronounced flavor than when you smoke it. You can taste the individual terpenes and cannabinoid profiles of each cannabis strain much more clearly, whereas smoking can quickly destroy the flavor and subtle nuances between strains. Because fewer toxic byproducts are released than when you burn marijuana, the flavor is much purer and “cleaner.” Moreover, you can control the flavor to a certain extent yourself through the temperature settings of your vaporizer, allowing you to refine your cannabis vaping experience down to the last detail.

Does all this mean that vaporizing cannabis is better than smoking it? No, certainly not. The experience of using cannabis is entirely a matter of personal preference. For example, some people might not appreciate the vape flavor of the green stuff, while others might never pick up a joint again. So, the choice is entirely up to you.
