In the Netherlands, we’re in a rather strange situation when it comes to magic mushrooms. As of December 1, 2008, the sale of (dried) magic mushrooms is completely prohibited, and psilocybin mushrooms fall under the Opium Act. All mushrooms with hallucinogenic effects, both fresh and dried, are listed on Schedule II of the Opium Act. But there is a “but.” Because although the active ingredients in magic mushrooms—psilocin and psilocybin—are banned, this does not apply to sclerotia (magic truffles) and grow kits used to cultivate magic mushrooms yourself. In fact, this means that magic mushroom grow kits are the only legal way to obtain magic mushrooms in the Netherlands—with the only alternative being to pick them yourself in the wild.
