Are you interested in making your own herbal capsules? For health benefits, to boost your libido, or maybe even to microdose your own magic mushrooms? Whatever your reason, you’ve come to the right place for everything related to making your own herbal capsules. Unlike buying herbs at the store, you can actually make capsules right at home. That way, you know for sure that the herbs you’re taking are fresh and organic to meet your specific needs.
Tools needed to encapsulate your own herbs
All you need to make your own herbal capsules are these tools:
- The ground organic herb (or herbs) you want to encapsulate. Here at Dutch-Smart, we sell a wide range of dried herbs that are perfect for this;
- Empty capsules. You can find these here;
- A capsule filling machine; this makes encapsulation super easy. Always make sure your capsules are the same size as the machine. Here at Dutch-Smart, we also sell combo packs of capsule filling machines + capsules, so you can always be sure you have the right ones.
- A shallow dish to work in. For example, a clear glass baking dish.
- A glass jar. A handy way to store capsules.
Step-by-step guide for DIY herbal capsules
Place the capsule machine in the center of the shallow baking dish. Then place the capsule machine on the stand. Open each empty capsule and place the longer half into the machine, opening the end. Repeat this until the capsule machine is full or you run out of capsule halves. Take the narrower half of each capsule and place it in the top of the capsule machine, with the open side facing up.
Next, get your herbal powder ready. Just two tablespoons of the herbal powder (or herbal blend) you want to encapsulate will fill about 24 capsules. First, fill the larger halves of your capsules with your herbal powder until each capsule is evenly filled. It is sometimes easiest to use a measuring cup to make pouring a bit easier, though a spoon is also sufficient. Use the capsule machine’s spreading card to gently pour the powder into the capsules by carefully moving the spreading card back and forth over the top of the herb, so that the powder is distributed evenly.
Take the tamper and press it down on the herbal powder to pack it into the capsules. Continue alternating between using the spreading card and the tamper to distribute the powder evenly and press down with the tamper until all the space in the capsule is filled. Once fully filled, use the spreading card to sweep the excess powder into the shallow dish.
From this point on, you can also fill the tops using the same method described above, but this can be quite frustrating. Although it leaves some space, you can leave the tops empty to make encapsulation easier. Take the bottom part of the machine and place the top of the capsule machine on it. Now press down on the center of the machine. If you feel like it went well, remove the cap. If it worked, all your capsules are now perfectly packaged.
