Life is full of stressful moments and situations. None of us is immune to periods of stress, anxiety, or mood swings. Fortunately for us, Mother Nature has given us some wonderful tools to help us cope with these challenges. One of them is Mulungu, a natural remedy derived from the mulungu tree that grows in the rainforests of South America. The herb, also known as Erythrina mulungu, is not yet widely known in the Western world, but it offers a number of interesting benefits and effects. In fact, in Brazil, it is one of the more popular herbal remedies for anxiety and nervousness. In this article, we’ll introduce you to this special herb.
What is Mulungu?
Mulungu grows naturally in the tropics of South and Central America. The bark and root of the tree have been used by indigenous tribes for many years to promote relaxation and achieve a state of calm. If you’ve never heard of it, you’re not alone. Aside from being included in a small number of dietary supplements, mulungu bark hasn’t received much attention from the general public in the Western world. Yet, more and more people are beginning to recognize the benefits and effects of mulungu. Not only does it have mood-enhancing effects, but it also supports healthy sleep patterns. And we could all use a better night’s sleep, couldn’t we?
To date, there aren’t many scientific studies highlighting the health effects of mulungu. However, small studies and research suggest that mulungu may offer certain health benefits, though more research is actually needed. Here are some key findings from the available studies:
Mulungu helps with anxiety
Do you suffer from anxiety? Then mulungu might help. Several studies show that mulungu shows promise in treating anxiety. For example, a study published in the Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmacology found that extracts of mulungu bark reduced anxiety in mice by affecting the central nervous system. Furthermore, a 2003 study in the Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin showed that rats treated with mulungu extract exhibited a reduction in anxiety. Given that people have also been using this herb for years to treat anxiety, it is quite possible that the same effects actually work in humans as well.
Mulungu reduces pain
A 2003 study in the Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin indicates that mulungu may help reduce pain. In tests on mice, the study’s authors found that mulungu extract can act as an antinociceptic, a substance that reduces the body’s sensitivity to painful stimuli. There is even preliminary evidence suggesting that the herb may also be useful in treating various conditions, such as epilepsy, bronchitis, hepatitis, gingivitis, or liver disease.
Mulungu improves mood
One of the most important effects of mulungu is that it can result in a strong physical sense of well-being. It makes you feel happy and content. The effect is described as a very pleasant warmth and tingling sensation in the body. It is this pleasant sensation that ultimately acts as an appetite suppressant. Additionally, it has a deeply calming effect, which in itself improves mood.
How to use mulungu?
If you’re worried about having to harvest the bark of the mulungu tree yourself: don’t worry. In our store, we have natural mulungu available in an easy-to-dose powder form.
