Tips for Tripping with Salvia divinorum

Salvia divinorum originates from Mexico, where it is considered a sacred substance. Shamans use the plant’s leaves not only as medicine but also to predict the future. Through Salvia rituals, they focus, for example, on lost objects or potential ailments and treatments. Today’s users of Salvia actually experience very little of a spiritual nature compared to the shamans in Mexico. However, it is true that virtually every user has a different story to tell about their experiences, making it difficult to predict the effects for anyone in advance. In this article, we’ll tell you a bit more about tripping on Salvia and give you some useful tips.

In general, Salvia is known for its disorienting effects and can make users feel disconnected from their bodies. Not everyone enjoys that! However, by preparing well and taking certain things into account, you can influence your trip to some extent. For example, if you’d like, you can certainly add a bit more “spirituality” to the experience.

How will you use Salvia?

Salvia divinorum is an herb that can be used in various ways. You can chew the leaves (chew them), but you can also smoke Salvia using a hookah or bong. Traditionally, Salvia is often chewed, but in the Netherlands that’s difficult: you can’t get fresh leaves here, since they only grow in Mexico. So here, you’ll have to make do with dried leaves that you rehydrate yourself.

Chewing

If you want to chew the Salvia leaves, take about 20 grams of dried leaves. Soak them in a bowl of water. Then gently squeeze them out, roll them into a ball, and put it in your mouth. By chewing as slowly as possible, you’ll absorb the most active compounds. As soon as it starts to feel unpleasant, spit out the ball and start on a new one. You won’t feel much for the first 15 minutes, but after 30 minutes, it’s best to remove all the leaves from your mouth. The effects after chewing usually last about half an hour, after which they gradually fade.

Smoking

If you’re looking for a short, intense trip, you can opt for extracts. You’ll need a small pipe for this, and you must smoke the entire extract in one go. It’s important for your trip that you inhale the entire dose at once. Hold the smoke in your lungs for a moment, and the trip will begin very quickly.

It’s hard to predict exactly what you’ll feel when you use Salvia for the first time. Some people experience hardly any effects at first, even when using an extract.

What should you keep in mind when starting a Salvia ritual?
