We all know that when we’re high on cannabis, we eat like our lives depend on it. Terpenes to the max!
More than 100 types of terpenes—the oils that give the plant its distinctive scent—have now been identified in cannabis. They originate in the flower’s resin glands, and two of them are undoubtedly the best known: THC and CBD. Yet terpenes aren’t unique to cannabis. They’re present in large quantities in numerous plants and fruits. Just like cannabinoids, terpenes are believed to influence the cannabis experience by binding to receptors in the brain, with different terpenes appearing to offer different therapeutic benefits.
Research published in the American Journal of Translational Research shows that eating foods rich in terpenes and omega-3 fatty acids can therefore influence how your body processes cannabis. And that is exactly why you can carefully select certain foods that work in your body in such a way that your marijuana high can be significantly enhanced, according to the website GreenState. They published a list of five foods that science says can boost your high, and of course, we can’t keep this from you.

Mango
Not only incredibly delicious, but also healthy—and therefore good for your high. Mangoes are packed with myrcene, one of the most common terpenes in cannabis. Myrcene is said to have a relaxing effect. If you eat a mango about an hour before consuming cannabis, the idea is that your cannabis receptors are primed and subsequently ready more quickly to process the cannabis more efficiently. “Myrcene has been shown to increase the maximum saturation level of the CB1 receptor, allowing for a greater maximum psychoactive effect. For most people, consuming a fresh mango 45 minutes before inhaling cannabis will result in a faster onset of psychoactivity and greater intensity,” according to Steep Hill Labs, a California-based institution that tests and analyzes medical cannabis.

Broccoli
We can imagine that broccoli is the last thing on your mind when you have the munchies, but if you still want to enjoy a more intense high, then broccoli is really the way to go. In addition to being incredibly healthy (it’s packed with iron, magnesium, selenium, fiber, protein, and vitamins), broccoli also contains a lot of beta-caryophyllene, a terpene that’s popular in cannabis. Combining the two could potentially lead to a stronger high and a calming sensation. This specific terpene binds to the body’s CB2 receptors in the same way as cannabinoids. According to some sources, it might even alleviate a variety of other physical ailments. But then again, who would expect anything less from the superfood broccoli?

Nuts
A good handful of fatty nuts goes down a treat during the munchies. It is precisely this fat that can help your body absorb cannabinoids like THC and CBD more quickly. “CBD and THC compounds are fat-soluble, so fat is their medium,” clinical nutritionist Kelly Dorfman told GreenState. “If you consume them with food that contains fat, they’ll be absorbed better—just like vitamin E generally absorbs better when taken in the form of oil.” Nuts are a great option for anyone looking for a tasty snack and plenty of health benefits. It takes your mood to the next level and protects your heart, too. The healthy fats in some nuts can even lower your heart rate and benefit people with cardiovascular issues. In short: go nuts!

Sweet potato
You might not have known this, but even before you add cannabis, sweet potatoes can help improve your mood by increasing serotonin production. But by combining them with cannabis, the euphoric effects of our favorite herb can come through even more strongly. In addition to the fact that sweet potatoes can be prepared in countless ways (you can even make delicious fries with them), they’re a great source of vitamin E, a nutrient that plays a key role in brain health while also protecting your heart. Furthermore, vitamin E has numerous antioxidant properties. All that aside, sweet potatoes are a great snack to have before or during your cannabis experience.

Tea
Antioxidants come in various forms, including flavonoids—which are also found in cannabis, for example. And tea just happens to be full of them. “Polyphenols, or flavonoids, are likely an important part of what makes tea a healthy beverage,” according to the Harvard School of Public Health. “These chemical compounds act as antioxidants, which counteract the harmful effects of free radicals in the body.” When combined with cannabis, these antioxidants and flavonoids could provide you with a deeply relaxing high. This is why cannabis tea is so popular in some parts of the world.
