5-HTP and L-tryptophan are often mentioned together, because they belong in the same chain. Yet they're different substances, and people choose one or the other for various reasons. In this blog you'll read how they relate, what the difference is and what to watch for. You'll find both in our supplements.
Same chain, different step
A natural process runs in your body: L-tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP, and 5-HTP is converted into serotonin. So L-tryptophan is the step before, 5-HTP the step after. Both are natural precursors, they're just at a different place in the chain.
L-tryptophan
L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which means you get it through food, for example from poultry, eggs, dairy, nuts and seeds. As a supplement, our L-tryptophan 400 mg with B6 is available. Because tryptophan is earlier in the chain, more conversion steps are needed.
5-HTP
5-HTP is a step further in the chain, just before serotonin. It's obtained from Griffonia seeds. Because it's that one step further, some people prefer this form over tryptophan. Our 5-HTP Natural with B6 is the basic form, and there are variants with vitamin B or CBD.
Which do you choose?
There's no fixed answer, it's a personal choice. Some start with tryptophan because it's a natural amino acid from food, others choose 5-HTP because it's a step further in the chain. Always start with the lowest recommended dose and see how you feel. Both are food supplements, not medicines.
Important to know
- Don't just combine 5-HTP and tryptophan with each other or with medication that acts on serotonin (such as antidepressants), without consulting your GP or pharmacist.
- Stick to the recommended dose on the packaging.
- Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting a doctor.
- These are supplements, not a substitute for a varied diet or medical care.

They don't work in strengths you can compare like that. 5-HTP is a step further in the chain, but what suits you depends on your own preference.
Can I take 5-HTP and tryptophan together?
Don't do that on your own. Because they work in the same chain, it's better to consult an expert first.
