Goop CEO and founder Gwyneth Paltrow is the latest Hollywood celebrity to invest in the cannabis industry. The actress and wellness guru has announced that she is joining Cann, a cannabis beverage company. Paltrow calls cannabis a “super-ingredient of the future” for wellness, but also says she was drawn to Cann’s beverages—which are infused with small doses of THC and CBD—as an appealing alternative to alcohol.

Cannabis movement
“There’s a whole movement going on, and the cannabis movement is, in a sense, at the intersection of all those elements,” Paltrow said. This marks the first time the actress has made a personal investment in the cannabis industry.
By endorsing Cann, Paltrow appears to be following in the footsteps of Martha Stewart, who recently launched a line of CBD gummies with Canopy Growth. Paltrow—with her 7.5 million Instagram followers and Goop’s 1.5 million Instagram followers and 2.5 million monthly podcast listeners—brings significant clout to the young cannabis industry, which she believes will go mainstream in the United States in no time.

Medicinal properties
“We are very clearly and definitively on the path toward cannabis legalization, and I think that’s how it should be,” said Paltrow. “I’m not actually a big personal user of it. But I think it has amazing medicinal properties and is very helpful for many people.”
The company produces THC- and CBD-infused beverages in flavors such as grapefruit-rosemary, lemon-lavender, and blood orange-cardamom. The tonics contain 2 milligrams of THC and 4 milligrams of CBD—amounts of cannabis compounds considered microdoses. Cann’s founders, Luke Anderson and Jake Bullock, said the goal of the smaller doses is to encourage consumers to drink multiple beverages without getting “high,” as is the case with alcoholic drinks, for example.

More and more cannabis products
“When people think of Gwyneth Paltrow, they don’t think of ‘weed’—they think of cutting-edge solutions for today’s health and wellness needs,” said Anderson. “Her endorsement is a sign that Cann (and microdosing beverages in general) are a viable answer to that common consumer pain point.”
Ultimately, Paltrow expects it’s only a matter of time before broader decriminalization of cannabis leads the mainstream public to embrace cannabis-derived products. And of course, we at Dutch-Smart can only cheer that on!

Gwyneth Paltrow and magic mushrooms
In addition to her growing interest in the cannabis industry, Gwyneth Paltrow also seems to have a thing for the magic mushroom world. On her show The Goop Lab, several cast members underwent a real psilocybin experience—or rather, a magic mushroom trip. In Jamaica, they participated in a ceremony led by trained psychedelic guides working with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Each received three grams of psilocybin in tea form—an experience that had many positive effects. Toward the end of the session, one staff member said she felt as though she had undergone five years of therapy in just five hours. Another described the experience as a turning point in her life.
