They say the early bird catches the worm, but that’s not the only benefit of getting up early. For example, male songbirds also have more sex when they get up early, simply because they spend more time courting females. If you’re thinking this works the same way for humans, you’re wrong. Recent research shows that it’s not morning people, but night owls who have the most exciting evenings! We’ll explain exactly why in this article. And of course, we’ll give you everything you need to stay up a few hours longer yourself. Your partner will thank you!

Night owls vs. early birds

According to a study published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, night owls—people who prefer to stay up late and wake up late in the morning—are more inclined to take risks in life. One of the results of this is that they have more sex and short-term relationships. “Night owls, both men and women, are more likely to be single or have short-term relationships compared to early birds, who are more likely to choose long-term relationships,” says Dario Maestripieri, lead author of the study and professor of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, in the school’s press release. This risky behavior is associated with increased cortisol levels— typically linked to high energy, excitement, stress, and even cognitive function —which makes men and women more active in the evening. The researcher believes that preferences for waking up early or, conversely, partying late into the early morning can be partly attributed to biology and genetic inheritance, but environmental factors can also play a role.

More and more frequent sex!

At the University of Chicago, Maestripieri investigated whether night owls really had more sex. He did this using data from a previous study of more than 500 graduates from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In the first study, financial risk aversion was assessed among male and female students, and it turned out that men are more willing to take financial risks than women. However, women with high testosterone levels were more similar to men in terms of taking financial risks. He then sought to investigate the relationship between these subjects’ sleep duration, relationship status, and number of sexual partners.

And what did he find? Night owls had more than twice as many sexual partners as men who prefer to go to bed early. Maestripieri believes that high cortisol levels may be a biological biomarker that explains the higher-risk behavior in night owls. “From an evolutionary perspective, it can be suggested that the night owl trait may have evolved to facilitate short-term mating, that is, sexual interactions outside of committed, monogamous relationships,” said the researcher. Being active in the evening would facilitate our needs and allow us to engage in sexual activities more often. In short: Are you often still awake after midnight, even though you have to go to work the next day? According to these studies, that means you probably have more sex than men who are already tucked up in bed by 10 p.m.!

Another study conducted this year also confirms these results. For this study, the researchers recruited more than 1,800 participants who responded to an online survey. They measured personality traits such as extraversion (how outgoing you are), chronotype (morning or evening orientation), socio-sexuality (views on casual sex), and long-term versus short-term orientation in sexual relationships. The results confirmed data from previous studies. Night owls have sex at a younger age, but they also do it more often and with more different partners.
