A hit from your vape for a wild night
According to a new study in the journal Healthcare, people between the ages of 18 and 30 who consume cannabis and alcohol are very likely to have superior sexual function and better orgasms than people who don’t use either substance. Before you go firing up the bong or downing a liter of vodka, though: keep in mind that this study is merely an observation and does not provide evidence of a causal link between intoxication and sexual performance. Still, the study offers some interesting findings...
It’s also important to remember that many researchers still strongly disagree about the impact of both weed and alcohol on a person’s ability to perform in the bedroom. Previous studies have yielded highly contradictory findings, and there are indications that both substances affect men and women differently and that age may also be a factor. For example, both cannabis and alcohol could actually make people drowsy, which isn’t exactly conducive to a good performance in the bedroom. Combine that with the fact that women generally get stoned faster, and you’ll soon find yourselves on different wavelengths.

Does cannabis lead to better sex?
But what about this specific study? Does cannabis lead to better sex? The authors of this study decided to focus specifically on young adults, as this group tends to consume the most alcohol and cannabis and also has the most sex. In the first half of 2020, a total of 274 people aged 18 to 30 were recruited to participate in the study in Almería, Spain.
All participants completed a series of questionnaires to provide researchers with information about their alcohol and cannabis use and various aspects of sexual functioning. In general, heavy cannabis users scored higher on sexual function and arousal than non-users, while heavy drinkers enjoyed the same benefits compared to those who abstained from alcohol. Additionally, higher levels of alcohol consumption were associated with better orgasms, with no difference between men and women.
In summary, the researchers of this study explain that “sexual functioning among young people who use cannabis and alcohol more frequently was found to be better than among those who use neither.” One of the possible reasons the researchers cite for this phenomenon is that both cannabis and alcohol “can reduce anxiety and shame, which facilitates sexual relationships.”

Previous research...
And this isn’t the first study of its kind. We previously wrote about research showing that marijuana use can give women’s sex lives a huge boost. In a study published in Sexual Health, researchers from Saint Louis University asked women to compare their sexual experiences with and without marijuana beforehand. Of the nearly 400 participants who took part, 68 percent described sex while using marijuana as “more enjoyable,” 60 percent reported an “increase in sexual desire,” and 52 percent experienced an “increase in satisfying orgasms.” If those aren’t great numbers...
Furthermore, various researchers point to marijuana’s ability to stimulate our senses, heighten the sense of touch, and encourage greater physical intimacy. In short: cannabis simply makes the entire sexual experience more enjoyable, for whatever reason. Also worth noting: consuming cannabis is easier than ever these days. Whereas you used to have to roll a joint, now you just toss some cannabis into your herbal vaporizer! Easy, right?
