One of the most remarkable products we sell here in our online smartshop is Salvia Divinorum. This Mexican herb originates from Mexico, where it is even considered a sacred substance. What makes Salvia Divinorum, also simply called Salvia, so special? It’s the psychedelic and hallucinogenic effects the herb produces. It is precisely these effects that have made the herb exceptionally well-suited for spiritual rituals and ceremonies.

Would you like to try salvia too? Then we recommend—as with all psychedelics—that you do your research and prepare thoroughly. In fact: the intense effects of salvia can sometimes be described as downright bizarre and therefore require quite a bit of knowledge. So it’s good to know what side effects might occur, and that’s exactly what we’re going to discuss today!

Why use salvia?

You might be wondering why you would actually use salvia. The various videos on Dumpert or YouTube don’t always show the most pleasant trips, and the risk of a bad trip is definitely there. So why would you take the risk? Well, it’s all about the desired effects. Salvia (or sage) contains salvinorin A: this substance is psychoactive and causes hallucinations, but it also produces a whole host of other effects. These can all be categorized on the so-called Salvia Experience Classification Scale, but we’ll tell you more about that in our Salvia Wiki.

Effects reported by users vary widely, but vivid hallucinations, a high, out-of-body experiences and sometimes even entering another person’s body, traveling back in time, seeing the environment as two-dimensional, and experiencing space in a distorted way—none of these are unusual effects. And such a bizarre trip? Well, some psychonauts simply can’t resist it. So it’s wise to know that your entire reality can change while using salvia—otherwise, it can actually be quite terrifying.

Side Effects of Salvia Divinorum

If you plan to smoke Salvia or consume it in any other way, make sure you are fully aware of all possible effects. In any case, it’s important to know that Salvia is absolutely not a drug for parties or festivals like alcohol, cannabis, or various energy drinks might be. Salvia’s powerful mind-altering effects cause your surroundings to change drastically. Interacting with other people or objects can feel scary, and since a cornered animal might act unpredictably, it’s best to choose a safe environment for use.

For the same reasons, a Salvia trip with minimal external influences is perhaps the best choice. So, for example, choose to trip at home in your bedroom with the lights off. Watching TV or having friends shouting around you? That is strongly discouraged. Sound, images, and sensations can all strongly influence your trip, and because salvia divinorum can alter perception and behavior, it should never be used in a public setting for everyone’s safety. Sometimes people move in a dreamlike state as if they were sleepwalking. In short, these are the side effects

  • Visual distortions
  • Mood changes
  • Seeing everything in two dimensions
  • Out-of-body experiences
  • Reliving old memories
  • General feeling of discomfort
  • Loss of contact with reality
  • Encountering beings
  • Experiencing space and time in a completely different way
  • The feeling of traveling back in time
  • A stoned feeling
  • Vivid hallucinations

Combining Salvia with other drugs

When it comes to drug use, combining different substances is almost never a good idea. At the same time, there’s a good chance that as a seasoned tripper, you’ll quickly dismiss this advice—and of course, we know that all too well. Still, we recommend never combining salvia with other types of drugs, but if you do: always start with an extremely small dose to reduce the risks. Although salvia appears to be relatively safe when combined with many types of medications, there are undoubtedly some medications you should not mix it with.

Is Salvia safe to use?

The major advantage of a salvia divinorum trip is that there are very few negative side effects—aside from having a bad trip. Of course, you shouldn’t perform any important tasks that require a clear head during your trip, such as driving or working. But there is currently no evidence of addiction, tolerance, or withdrawal symptoms. So, in terms of physical effects, you can consume the plant with peace of mind and enjoy your trip without worry. For example, no cases of salvia overdose have ever been reported. We recommend using salvia at home in a safe environment with people you feel comfortable with. It’s always helpful to have a trip sitter: someone who stays sober and can help you if you do experience feelings of anxiety or panic.

Buy Salvia Divinorum at Dutch-Smart

You can purchase Salvia Divinorum in the Netherlands as salvia leaves or salvia extracts. You’ll find both in our webshop. For example, you can get 5 grams of Salvia Divinorum for less than five euros. The extracts are much more concentrated and therefore stronger, so we recommend trying the leaves first before switching to extracts—though the main advantage of an extract is that you know exactly how much you’re dosing. The trip resulting from taking an extract does, however, last a lot shorter, on average about ten minutes.
